Rush Holt on H.R. 358

by: Rosi Efthim

Fri Oct 21, 2011 at 03:28:42 PM EDT

Found this 1-minute floor statement by Rep. Rush Holt at the website RH Reality Check (that's RH as in prescription, not for Holt's initials).

Holt reminds us the GOP-majority House is still short on jobs creation and once again indulging themselves in yet another version of their legislative assault on women's health rights, with the Orwellian-titled "Protect Life Act" (H.R. 358).

CREDO Action's pointed out the hypocrisy of the DCCC using H.R. 358 as a fundraising tool (calling it the "Let Women Die" Act, then giving money to 15 Dem candidates, 3 of whom in fact voted to "Let Women Die" - voting for H.R. 358.

No, none of them are NJ. All our NJ Dems voted No. (So did all of the EMILY's List women, none of whom are NJ, because we - still - don't have any chicks in our delegation). No surprise, every GOP member of the NJ congressional delegation voted Yes, even those who cast themselves as moderates. (H.R. 358 vote tally)

For Rush Holt, who is married to a physician, and to all our NJ House Dems, this chick says Thanks.

If you want chicks in the House, you... (0.00 / 0)
...have to advocate for a more competitive map and/or a map with open seats.

The current map forced Marge Roukema, a real moderate Republican, into retirement as she would not have been able to survive a primary election challenge from Scott Garrett.  It also made the two most competitive districts in the state, the 7th and 12th, safe for the incumbent Republican and Democrat respectively.

As disappointing as Linda Stender's 2008 performance was compared with her 2006 performance, the fact that Leonard Lance was a far more popular Republican than Mike Ferguson and did not have any of his Bush-era baggage cannot be discounted.  I would love to see if the third time could be the charm for Stender, particularly in a 7th district that more resembles its older, more competitive boundaries and is wide open for both Democrats and Republicans.

Conversely, I think that Rush Holt, who has been the beneficiary of a safe district for the last decade after winning his 12th District seat in a close race and an equally close re-election campaign, should have to suck it up a bit and face the winner of a Lance-Chris Smith GOP primary election in a far more competitive district.
