Jon Runyan's anemic fundraising numbers

by: Jay Lassiter

Wed Oct 19, 2011 at 02:30:48 PM EDT

For such a big guy he's got an awfully teensy (warchest)

The Jon Runyan Campaign just filed its latest FEC report.  Considering he's a vulnerable 1st-term incumbent in an outrageously expensive media market, his numbers are almost laughable.

Total Raised: $234,908
Raised from PACs: $172,400*
These contributions made up 73 percent of total receipts.
(*with only $62,508 from individuals.)
Cash on Hand: $378,843
Debt: $254,145

With numbers like that, the climate might be right for a sleeper democrat with some fundraising prowess.

Stay tuned!

Runyan is doing fine (0.00 / 0)
It's early in the game, and Runyan will get lots of money from the Koch Brothers and other Tea Party benefactors.

It's a shame that there are no women within the New Jersey congressional delegation. We have several strong female candidates in the district including Aimee Belgard, Pam Lampitt, and Shelly Adler. Of course, my preference would be to convince Rosi to move to Burlington County and run for the seat!

with an argument like that (the "he'll be fine" line) Deciminyan, you might have a hard time with your stated goal of recruiting someone better to run against him.

But I am sure Jon Runyan appreciated your big vote of confidence.  So at least you can count on that.

He didn't give a vote of confidence, just noted the reality of the situation.

I don't think (0.00 / 0)
Jon Runyan has Deciminyan in his back pocket, or on his cheerleading squad. The fact that you suggest he does gives me the serious giggles. That said, I suspect Runyan may have some big boys he can count on down the line.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

The Pickens Paradox (0.00 / 0)
This gets back to the Pickens Paradox. While I voted for John Adler, I didn't campaign for him because I was mad about his Health Care vote. I regret that. Maybe if more of us had taken a more active role in the campaign, we wouldn't be stuck with the bad representation we now have in the Third Congressional District.

It may be way down the line (0.00 / 0)
I think that prospective Runyan donors are waiting to see what happens with regards to redistricting as it is possible, even with population shifts southward, that he could find himself without a district as it would not be difficult to put Cherry Hill and Mount Laurel into Rob Andrews'd district and make NJ-3 an open seat.

Runyan might have been the best candidate that the Burlington and Ocean Republicans could have put up against John Adler in 2010, but now that an Adler-Runyan rematch is an impossibility and NJ-3 can be made even more conservative than it was, I think that there are other Republicans in both counties, including but not limited to teabagging wingnuts who would like to have the opportunity to run next year and would prefer to do it in a relatively fair and open environment and not have to take on a quasi-incumbent.

Also, I think that it is possible that if it appears as if Romney is not going to be the GOP's Presidential nominee and Joe Kyrillos is not going to run for the U.S. Senate, Runyan will be encouraged to run against Mike Doherty as the combination of a far-right-wing Presidential and a far-right-wing Senate candidate could make some of the Republican Congressional candidates very nervous.

I think that Deciminyan is right to say that Runyan's money will eventually come flowing in once other questions have been answered, but until then, he is going to have no choice but be very nervous and wait.

How many of those candidates... (3.00 / 1)
...live in Cherry Hill?  I don't know why Cherry Hill was the lone Camden County municipality to be placed in NJ-3 during the last redistricting, but I seriously doubt that it will remain there when the next redistricting is completed.

I would like to see Runyan's Mount Laurel placed into NJ-1, so he has to run for re-election against Rob Andrews, and Chris Smith's Hamilton placed into a new NJ-12 that includes all of Hunterdon and Mercer Counties and part of Somerset County that would create a competitive district, which forces Smith and Leonard Lance to face each other in a GOP primary election with the winner taking on Rush Holt in the general election.

This would also create two Republican-leaning open seats out of most of Burlington and Monmouth Counties and all of Union County, which should make the teabagging wingnuts froth with delight and possibly give a Democratic candidate in these districts the chance to pull off an upset.
