Occupy Trenton: You Either Get It or You Don't

by: Bill Orr

Sat Oct 08, 2011 at 04:21:50 PM EDT

"This whole Occupy movement is really getting silly. The demands are ludicrous and not focused at all. They completely contradict themselves and spit in the face of economic axioms. Sad that the middle class, privileged college hipster sitting outside can feel so entitled while knowing so little about the world." - Brian McGovern, Managing Editor, Save Jersey

  • "Movement getting silly" - There's nothing silly about our economic crisis or about trying to make a change. The grievances are real. The stakes are high.

  • "The demands are ludicrous and not focussed" - Partly true, but such was the case with the Tea Party when it got started. There is value early on in not being too specific. More people can be drawn into the cause and can project their own concerns, of which there are many in our current crisis. Early on some demands may seem ludicrous, but gradually the movement hones its issues into those that are most compelling, most achievable, and of most concern to the participants. There is no reason to focus immediately just on bankers, or just jobs, or just big corporations. These and other issues are all a part of the total problems the 99% face today.

  • "They completely contradict themselves and spit in the face of economic axioms." - As with the Tea Party and other movements, gradually there will be more clarity and less contradictions. Seeking ways today to foster recovery, create jobs, reduce income inequality, and end egregious practices is not spitting in the face of economic axioms.

  • "The middle class, privileged college hipsters can feel so entitled knowing so little about the world." - The author of the above must not have visited and talked with the demonstrators. These people are suffering. They are folks who in the midst of the Great Recession have lost their health insurance, lost their home, lost their job, seen their 401 retirement plans tank, been ripped off by banks, can no longer meet basic needs, are concerned with their own financial future, or believe their children's future to be bleak. They are people who see corporations sitting on huge amounts of cash, lavishly compensating top executives, and creating sneaky ways to enrich themselves, such as adding a $5.00 monthly fee to debit card users. I suspect these demonstrators know a lot about the world. We all can learn and benefit from their energy, ideas, and creativity.

New Yorkers and Americans across the country are quickly learning about the Occupy movement. Rallies have taken place or are planned in more than 60 locations. In Trenton and Jersey City the movement has started. In our state with a governor who has received bushels of money from corporations and the very wealthy, who has shown scant concern for our high unemployment, has aided big companies, and who has made life increasingly expensive for the poor and the middle class, it is time for individuals to stand up and demand a refocussing of priorities.

Most people get it, but some do not. The folks in Trenton and Jersey City do get it, but they need support from the 99%.

    I guess I don't (0.00 / 0)
Because this protest should hold our politicians accountable ....I do get that During the Obama administration, the U.S. government has accumulated more debt than it did from the time that George Washington took office to the time that Bill Clinton took office....as wel as since Barack Obama was sworn in, the share of the national debt per household has increased by $35,835.I also get that a staggering 48.5% of all Americans live in a household that receives some form of government benefits, that's up 90% from when RR was president ....but that OK because this is all big corporations fault ....Make no mistake about this Great collapse you are witnessing  has been brought upon us all by our politicians and reckless spending ...by BOTH parties

Caused by of 8 years of Bush (4.00 / 1)
This is the BUSH RECESSION (depression). The voters that put him in office are more to blame for it than Pres. Obama.

    WTF is Save Jersey? (0.00 / 0)
and how does someone who writes
"spit in the face of axioms" call himself an editor?

    Save Jersey (0.00 / 0)
It's a NJ Republican conservative blog. Ironically McGovern is himself a "privileged college hipster" - the group he criticizes. Some people get it and some don't.

It appears that I am blacklisted on Save Jersey. When I commented on this post with this comment, it never got past the moderator.

    The unwashed masses (4.00 / 1)
My response to thie Save Jersey article's author, who apparently has led a fairly insular life, is that if people like him who often say that "socialism" is rampant in this country want it to stop they need to start telling the large corporations and banks to start practicing a better brand of capitalism.
