Reminder to Gov. Christie: You Work for Us

by: Blue Jersey

Thu Sep 15, 2011 at 04:24:44 PM EDT

Yesterday, a condescending Chris Christie told media "I'm allowed to meet people I want to meet who want to talk to me about whatever issues they want to talk about - You're not entitled to know everything I do."

Actually, Governor, when you do it in our name, as Governor of the State of New Jersey, we are.

Last week's revelation of a hidden gubernatorial trip to a Koch Brothers corporate lovefest in Colorado once again shows a Governor with a problem defining the line between public and private, in a way that hurts New Jersey taxpayers, every day.

Blue Jersey :: Reminder to Gov. Christie: You Work for Us
It was just this spring that Governor Christie defended his use of a state-owned helicopter to touch down at his son's baseball game. He initially said that there was "nothing inappropriate" about using his public position as the Governor to take this private perk - and then after a firestorm of criticism paid the state a nominal sum for the rides. Even after that, he still hid helicopter records and to this day still won't tell us who he took helicopter trips with - who else was riding on the taxpayer financed helicopter for trips to Island Beach State Park and elsewhere.

So back then it was ok for the Governor to act publicly - using a publicly-funded $12.5 million helicopter - to deal with something that was clearly within his private life.

Now, the Governor claims the right to act privately - hiding his speeches, e-mails, and even where he's going - from the public when doing public business. Governor Christie isn't going to Koch Brothers meetings as part of his "personal life" as the Governor claims. He doesn't get to go because they think he's a really good dad or because it's a cool vacation. It's because New Jersey (well, 48% of New Jersey) elected him Governor.

This kind of secrecy has consequences. We don't know who is advising Christie out of state; we don't know who is paying money in return, given the potential of shadowy donations to groups like Reform Jersey Now and Center for a Better New Jersey that don't disclose records; and we can't verify the truth of important questions, like Christie's damning accusation about Speaker Sheila Oliver. We have no way of knowing when the Governor is making policy based on national ambitions and dollars instead of based on those of us stuck with his decisions in New Jersey. In short, we have no way of knowing what he is doing in our name, as Governor of our state.

So we at Blue Jersey offer the Governor two pieces of advice.

First, a reminder that there is a thing called the law. You should know that, having served as U.S. Attorney for eight years. It's not about you and your generosity on bestowing what you wish us to hear, as you hinted at a press conference yesterday ("I'm not doing it - so move on.") It's about what laws like the Open Public Records Act require you to disclose to us, as our employee. This notion will catch up with you, probably sooner rather than later. You'd be well advised to get out in front and just comply.

Second, there's 8.5 million of us here, living our lives every day. We're not pawns in your national political ambitions or the Koch Brothers experiment. Cut the trips to Colorado, focus on New Jersey, and stop talking down to us. Secretly sacrificing your own state for your corporate cronies may fly for the Governor of Texas - but it isn't going to play in Paramus or Pennsauken.

Stop using the state helicopter for political fundraisers and joy riding Michele Brown.

We pay for that.

to clarify, I believe Michele Brown was one of the aides blacked out in the OPRA request not that there was any particular activity going on in the copter (god help us all).

Can someone with knowledge of the State Constitution explain the reporting process that must be required when the Lt. Governor assumes the role of Governor.

I believe every time Chrisite leaves the State then his Lt. Governor becomes Governor.

Does that just happen or is there some form of formal transfer. Does the Lt. Governor get more security when she assumes the role of Governor? Is there a cost factor to the State?

Does the Lt. Governor have to inform someone that she is now Governor.

I would think there must be some process in place so that the citizens know who is the Governor at any particular time.

I was in Delaware once when Governor Christie was also there. (He was campaigning for a DE candidate.) There were NJSP Troopers standing around Governor Christie the whole time. I have to believe that whenever the NJ Governor leaves New Jersey, his NJSP security detail (e.g. NJSP Troopers) also go with the Governor.

I have to believe that when Chris Christie leaves NJ, the taxpayers of NJ are paying for the airline tickets, hotel bills and the meal expenses for those NJSP Troopers that always travel with Chris Christie. Unless and until Chris Christie is willing to reimburse the taxpayers of NJ for these extra expenses, then any & all travel that the Govenor makes outside of the state should be considered something other than "private" or "personal."  What Chris Christie calls "personal" travel  is really a public matter involving thousands of dollars in taxpayer's money. (How much money did the taxpayers of NJ spend for those NJSP Troopers that were with the Governor when Governor Christie  took his family to Disneyworld for a week during a recent blizzard?)  To the extent that NJ taxpayers are paying for NJSP Troopers to work outside of NJ, then any & all expenses that those NJSP Troopers might incur are a matter of public record. These pubic records (e.g., copies of hotel bills, meal expenses, airline tickets, etc.) should be accessible to anyone willing to make a simple OPRA request, the claims of Governor Christie notwithstanding.

Incidentally, whenever the Lt. Governor becomes the Acting Governor, she is also protected by the NJSP. Bottom line: whenever Chris Christie leaves NJ, the taxpayers of NJ are paying more.
