Jeff Gardner & Joey Novick in Togas Tonight

by: Rosi Efthim

Something familiar! Something peculiar!
Something for everyone! A comedy tonight!
Something appealing, Something appalling
Something for everyone! A comedy tonight!

           - Comedy Tonight, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
           - Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim

Funny Thing/Forum1
Jeff Gardner & Joey Novick in togas       Two of the Funny Things at the Forum
That's Jeff Gardner on the left and Joey Novick, two of my favorite people, and two of the stars of an all-lawyers production of A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum tonight at NJPAC.

The musical is a benefit, part of an all-arts effort to raise money for New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts, which matches lawyers giving their time to members of the state's arts community, particularly to low income artists & non-profits. Joey's done that.

Both these guys hang out at Blue Jersey, but they're also both in politics - Joey's a former Hunterdon County Democratic Chair who was the only lifelong Dem on Flemington's Borough Council for 12 years. Jeff ran for State Senate earlier this year from LD-35. Both are local municipal chairs for the Dems.

Rosi Efthim :: Jeff Gardner & Joey Novick in Togas Tonight
Jeff plays Marcus Lycus, a buyer and seller of beautiful women. And Joey plays the blind-as-a-bat Erronius, who is searching for his long-lost children, stolen by pirates. Forum, a farce based on other farces from Roman times, is the musical that helped launch the stage careers of Zero Mostel, Jack Gilford (both getting work after the red scare blacklist) and later revived by such actors as Nathan Lane and Whoopi Goldberg (cross-dressing as the male lead Pseudolus). Theater-goers will see a gallery of beautiful artwork in many media as they enter NJPAC, all by lawyers, including acrylics by Hon. Faith Hochberg, former U.S. Attorney for New Jersey - Christie's old job.

Stephen Sondheim, who wrote the music & lyrics was mighty amused to hear about a Forum staging with all lawyers. He wrote the production a note: "I can't imagine anything more bizarrely entertaining than a group of lawyers putting on a production of Forum. His letter is printed in tonight's program.

Break a leg, you two. But don't trip on your togas.

Well (0.00 / 0)
That's not as scary a pic as I thought!!  Break a leg, you guys.

Hahaha - thanks Rosi! (4.00 / 2)
The show played to a sold-out crowd at NJPAC, and the event raised over $30k for the organization. Every fundraiser should be this much fun!
:)

I prefer "Merchant of Love" (0.00 / 0)
(and I got to blackmail a Senator!)
