Who helped Christie weather Irene?

(Good to keep in mind. - promoted by DSWright)

No matter what side of the political aisle you are on, most people will agree that Chris Christie stayed on top of everything when it came to Hurricane Irene and evacuating key areas in her path, such as the entire Jersey Shore (particularly Long Beach Island, Cape May, and Atlantic Counties).   (I am writing this from New York as a Jersey Shore evacuee.)  What many do not realize is that Christie could not have done his job without help from the very people that he will go back to demonizing as soon as the storm fades from our news cycle-- public employees.

When most people in the shore communities left and sought safe shelter elsewhere, a few stayed behind because it was a part of their job.  Police and firefighters put their own lives in danger for the sake of keeping to make sure the few that stayed behind and the communities would survive the storm.  They could have been like everyone else and left, but they answered the call of duty to serve the community.

As this fall's legislative and next year's presidential election cycles heat up, you can bet that Chris Christie will hit the campaign trail as a hero for his response to Irene (although many speculate that he acted the way he did because he visited with Mickey Mouse the last time a disaster hit New Jersey).  The media, still pushing him to run for president will say that he acted presidential.

But very few will recognize that he could not have done it without the public employees putting their own lives at risk to help the communities in which they serve.   The public employees should get the respect they deserve.  They are not "union thugs."  They do not milk the taxpayer dry.   They risked their own lives to make sure you were safe.  After all that, is protecting their right to collective bargaining too much to ask?

Wow, I really thought this was a diary about Michele Brown (0.00 / 0)
but good job none the less.

Police, firefighters, and teachers protecting and serving our communities.

Thank You.

Will Union Leadership Let Taxpayers Know? (2.00 / 3)
Instead of wasting millions of dollars telling taxpayers what they are against, maybe it would be beneficial to take out some adds and tell the taxpayers where the workers were when the storm hit.

Who protected the taxpayers?
Who kept services running?
Who will be there today to answer questions to help taxpayers?

BUT NO! THE UNION LEADERSHIP IS TOO STUPID TO THINK OF THIS TYPE OF PUBLICITY.

Christie did a good job and he will definitely let people know he did a good job!

Nothing wrong with that at all.

Many Public employees also did a good job,but their STUPID union leadership will never tell that story.

Maybe they will surprise me but I doubt it.

Do you EVER have anything POSITIVE to contribute (0.00 / 0)
... that isn't a Christiecrat ad?

Using words like "Stupid" (in caps, even) is indicative of the classless sniping you are hung up on.

The only positive you ever offer is to ballyhoo your slate of turncoats and anti-public worker politicians who insincerely wear the "D" after their name.

You wonder why you're targeted for discrediting? Try reading your posts for a change. You'll find that you are likely the most intolerant, disingenuous poster on this blog.

Personally, I find so easilly disputing your rantings to be entertaining. Please, keep me busy.

In the end, UNIONS (Because the public workers ARE the Unions) did a GREAT job and they don't NEED to spend their war chests on self agrandizement because the work speaks for itself. They don't need to brag. Their work speask for them. Christie, on the other hand, can't ignore giving himself an ego stroking.

The Governors office has a free pulpit from which to back pat, and good on him for his single sentence recognition of the very public workers he's spent the last two years hammering and ridiculing. It was almost unbelievable that he gave the public workers accollades but even he couldn't stop their and had to take jabs at the people of New Jersey when he said "Over a million people left the Jersey shore in 24 hours and did so in an orderly fashion. That is a pretty extrordinary thing for people in New Jersey to do anything in an orderly fashion. That's the great thing about the people of New Jersey. They pulled together in a time of crisis and put aside their 'normal' behaviour patterns..." .

To quote you, "Christie did a good job and he will definitely let people know he did a good job!"... Yeah, he did a good job at reminding us he is a classless oaf.

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.

It's a great idea (0.00 / 0)
Just think of the images and the narrative...

about time (3.00 / 1)
Wow, so nice of our publicity hound/governor (how many interviews did he do on national TV from "THE ROCK"?) to finally give credit to the dedicated public service employees who he has vilified for months and months on end.  What a hypocrite.

And, of course, the brushing aside of any comparison to his abandoning his post to take a sunny vacation in Florida during one of the worst blizzards the State has experienced was the icing on the cake.

Here's to the devoted State workers, be they police, firefighters, teachers, and/or those who ran shelters, delivered food, and took care of others.  They are the true heart and soul of the State.

NJ's Been Disaster Drilling Since 9/11 (0.00 / 0)
That's one of the reasons everything worked so well. NJ was one of the first state's to certify first, second and third responders on an ongoing basis and train people on standard protocols for a disaster response.

Counties(and the state) run disaster drills on a regular basis, including hurricane response drills, that involve all the different responders.

The state and counties have been working on this for 10 years now.

That's the story behind the story. :)
