Selective Oversight

by: Adam L

Fri Aug 26, 2011 at 09:07:00 AM EDT

In an editorial today (albeit on an unrelated matter), Al Doblin reminds us about Rep. Scott Garrett's views on Government oversight when it comes to GIVING OUT money to people in need:
The honor system never works well when there is public money for the taking. After Hurricane Katrina, Rep. Scott Garrett, R-Wantage, was vilified by pretty much everyone for not supporting emergency federal funding for victims, but he raised what later became a prescient point: That there wasn't proper oversight and without it, there would be widespread fraud and abuse.

Adam L :: Selective Oversight
Ironically, it is the selective reasoning by Garrett that makes him such a hypocrite.  When it comes to proper oversight of the tens or hundreds of billions wasted in Iraq and given out to "contractors" whose lives didn't depend on it, he has never called for investigations - and he voted for all funding for Iraq (except when it was tied to providing troops with proper rest or armor and equipment).  And when it comes to TAKING MONEY from We the People - as the banks, Wall Street and rampant foreclosure fraud has done, Garrett has incredibly called for LESS oversight, even though the overwhelming evidence is that the already dismantled oversight and "honor system" is what led directly to the massive recession, housing bubble and foreclosure crisis.

As New Jerseyans brace for Hurricane Irene, we can only wonder what Representative Garrett will do if the need arises for FEMA funding in his district or if disaster hits here in northern New Jersey.  But based on his prior track record, it looks like unless we are a Republican linked "contractor" or financial industry crook, he'll once again leave us twisting in the wind - literally and figuratively.
