The Headline that Wasn't

I was going to call this diary "Governor Christie Hates Veterans", but that's a bit over the top, even for me. But his actions yesterday certainly did not give our veterans their due recognition.
deciminyan :: The Headline that Wasn't
As reported in today's Courier-Post, the governor slashed funding for Camden's Battleship New Jersey Museum. In today's environment, it's difficult to argue for funding for museums when thousands of New Jersey children are starving and are going without adequate medical care. Yet, as the governor provides some of our limited funds to museums across the state, all the "Big-J" received from the state was a slap in the face.

I've visited the USS New Jersey several times, and as someone who has spent a good part of his career developing sophisticated systems for modern warships, I am in awe of the men (and maybe a few women) who operated and maintained this behemoth from World War II to the Persian Gulf War.

But in addition to honoring the service of our seamen, the New Jersey is an essential part of the economics of the Camden waterfront. Like the Aquarium, the New Jersey draws tourists - veterans and non-veterans - from around the country. If this battleship museum is forced to shut down or severely curtail its hours, the already fragile Camden economy will suffer.

Today's Navy has replaced battleships with carriers, smaller surface ships, and manned and autonomous air power.  Touring this battleship helps today's citizen understand the work and sacrifices that previous generations made to give us what we have today.  The New Jersey is the most decorated battleship in American naval history.

So my message to Governor Christie is: respect our veterans and help the Camden community instead of millionaires by restoring funds for the USS New Jersey and her museum. And my message to my readers is to visit this wonderful historical artifact while you still can.  Your time will be well spent.
