Jenn Beck Divorces Her Commitment Against Marriage Equality

by: EJZip

Sun Aug 07, 2011 at 07:21:55 PM EDT

promoted by Rosi

Jennifer Beck voted against gay marriage in 2009 claiming that's what her constituents wanted.  She swore she'd stand firm on this issue. (Even though as an Assemblywoman in the same 12th District she supported the 2nd class Civil Unions law on behalf of the same constituents).

She claimed she'd never back down.

But that was before Long Branch, Ocean Grove, Asbury Park and other LGBT friendly towns became part of her district.

Now all of sudden Senator Beck is ready to support the very legislation she opposed. Her flip-flop on marriage equality is an insult to the LGBT community.

Are we now expected to believe that these are her true convictions? Or was she voting with her conscience when she voted the first two times around? At that point, Governor Corzine would have signed marriage equality into law. Christie has vowed to veto any such measure.

Beck threw us under the bus when she voted against equality when she thought that that would advance her political career with a Governor-elect Christie.

EJZip :: Jenn Beck Divorces Her Commitment Against Marriage Equality
This blatant hypocrisy epitomizes political cynicism at its worst.

I urge all voters in the 11th District of Monmouth County to remember that, in the words of Beck's Democratic Opponent, Ray Santiago, "When it mattered most and the world was watching, Senator Beck decided to appease Chris Christie and her Tea Party base. All residents who support human rights and full marriage equality for all of our brothers and sisters in the LGBT community will no doubt see through Beck's hypocrisy."

It's time for the 11th District of NJ to have an honest, forthright and dedicated representative in Trenton who will make decisions for the good of his district and not personal gain.

Ms. Beck -- who is engaged to be married a second time -- may have finally seen the light on marriage equality, but it's the dim light of opportunism that is her beacon.

It's time to put a spotlight on her self-centered actions and make a change for honesty and integrity in the NJ State Senate.

Vote November 8th for Ray Santiago for Senate.

Ed Zipprich serves as Executive Vice President of the NJ Stonewall Democrats and is a Councilman in the Borough of Red Bank.

Good stuff. Too little, too late, Jen.

But really.... (0.00 / 0)
Isn't that what our "representatives" are supposed to do?  If the makeup of a district changes shouldn't the representative be willing to "modify" their position to more accurately voice the will of their constituents.

I know their are many agendas surrounding Sen Beck, and her opponent, but maybe this should not be the main one.

So if her constituents were racists... (0.00 / 0)
should she side with THOSE bigots too?

Bigotry is not acceptable no matter who your constituents might be.

Using "But her constituents are bigots so she should be too" (loose interpretation of your question, I know, but accurate to the essence) is a pathetic excuse for ignorance and serving her constituents hateful ignorance in supporting the denial of equal rights and the promotion of bigotry, she didn't do her constituents nor the state any favors and her flip-flopping only clarifies that she is nothing but a "Anything to get elected" hack.

Another self-serving politician who doesn't understand what "Civil Service" means.

Equality (4.00 / 1)
For whatever reason she changed her mind, or got pushed into changing her mind, I'm glad she's in our column.

But sandy23, what I might say to your point is that equality is equality. If same-sex couples have the right to marry in LD-37 (Weinberg's district) they have the right to marry in LD-12 (Beck's).

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Beck was for ME before she voted against it... twice (4.00 / 2)
As I recall, it was common knowledge that she supported ME until Chris Christie won the election and she, as well as Kip Batemen and perhaps one or two other Republicans folded to the the King.

I still remember her scarcely audible "NO" vote without comment in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Now she is running scared and NEEDS the "gay" vote in her new district. It's a little obvious how disingenuous she appears, and perhaps Christie for allowing her such independence, but this looks like pure expedient politics.

I'm surprised at how forgiving some Democrats are of Republicans who change their minds for pure political reasons while belaboring Democrats like Rob Andrews who might have changed his position on a "progressive" matter because of direct and effective education.

My 2 cents

This is why so many people don't trust... (0.00 / 0)
...or believe politicians when they move their lips. Until they're held to account, they'll never change their weather vane behavior regardless of which party they belong to. Is it too much to ask that we hold elected officials to a higher standard? I suppose it is since so many are so quick to forgive and forget.

How does she think? (0.00 / 0)
This sort of flip-flopping really makes me wonder just how people like Sen. Beck think about issues, assuming they do at all. Is her position dictated by political expediency? Then sheson is lacking in principles and intellectual independence. Is her position change determined strictly by what her constituents think? Then why not just take a poll or, better yet, do away with representative democracy altogether and have a system of direct democracy? Is she capable of understanding that some matters transcend popularity contests and are, quite simply, matters of what is just in a civil society in all of New Jersey? The fact that she can waffle as much as she does says quite a lot.

Not comfortable with getting personal (0.00 / 0)
First, let me say how much I love Ed Zipprich, an effective a local official as exists anywhere in America.

But I think commenting on a public official's being "engaged to be married a second time" is too personal.  No need to go there - we have many good arguments for marriage equality based on substance.  There are also other arguments showing our opponents' hypocrisy that do not rely on getting personal.

Just my thoughts - and I expect very divergent responses to this.

Battle Tested and Smart (0.00 / 1)
Everyone on this site who constantly spews venom should read and listen to what you say.

Politics is about winning.

You went through hell the last time ME came up and you lost. But you trashed no one! You Were angry but you "stayed in the game" and now , hopefully ,things will go your way.

You were smart. You mended fences and kept up the battle. Politics is often a dirty game that can bring fulfilling results. Bumps and bruises come with the battle.

CWA ,NJEA ,and many on this site should follow your example.

IT IS ALL ABOUT WINNING THE FIGHT!

Good luck with ME and in any small way I will be happy to sing your praises ( on this site that may be a bad thing!)

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
when i saw Jen for the first time after getting engaged, i was tempted to let the bitterness get the best of me, especially when i saw how happy and in love she obviously was.  It was moments after the anti-bullying bill sailed through the Senate.  I was in a heavenly mood so I decided to be happy for her.

That said, it really sucks that she sold out the gay community for political purposes.  Her gay friends and constituents remain unimpressed with her profile in cowardice the two times she voted to marginalize us.  But times heals all wounds.  And so does the realization that we (gays) need A LOT of people who voted NO to change their votes next time.

Once again you add very little ,except personal attacks.

If you are a  "typical " progressive, then that is a group that is in deep trouble.

You have tried to be the judge and jury on this site and you have been rejected.

Try to comment on my comment and stop with the juvenile personal attacks.

You embarrass the site and yourself.

You opened the door (0.00 / 0)
... when you turned the subject of fighting for LGBT rights into an attack on public workers union.
That is "Trolling".

It is going to be a hard enough fight without you muddying the waters to make your points for Sweeney and Norcross.

Your rant against everything I post is getting old ,and quite frankly childish.

I praised Mr. Goldstein.

Your arm chair form of " progressive " politics is nothing more than Tea Party attacks from the left.

Time for you to understand that there are two sides to every issue. Respect others opinions and maybe you will have some credibility.

Once again, firstamend07 ... (0.00 / 0)
You have no credibility on the subject of Sweeney and the powers behind him. I think someone pointing out that you try to hijack a thread about something else to serve the person you shill for here - and criticize his detractors -  is entirely in-bounds.

That doesn't make you wrong in your opinions, but it does make reasonable people question your motive. Your "praise" of Steven notwithstanding, don't equate what someone says on this forum whether you like its tone or not, with the impact of a decision that Sweeney made to abstain on a vote he was counted on as the Senate President to make - either way. The former is an attitude that rankles just you, the latter a legislative decision that affected thousands of people's lives directly. If Sweeney has changed his mind, for whatever reason - including political expedience - then, fine. That's an action too, and he's welcome on equality's side of the fence.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Hardley an "Arm-Chair" progresive. (0.00 / 0)
Ask around.
I walk the walk, talk the talk and carry the water...
Your "Arm Chair" accusation of me is as inaccurate as your claims that Sweeney is a "Good" dem or that the "Devils Bargain" the "Christiecrats" just shoved down the throats of hard working middle class civil servants was the best deal.

Besides whining in here that your personal hero is being givien short shriff (as deserved as it is) what have YOU done?

Walked a line for LGBT rights? Workers rights? Better schools? Responsible government? Pone Banked for change? Given your time to anything OTHER than promoting Sweeney's "Christiecrat Agenda"?
I doubt it.

"Friends of Mr. Sweeney" (0.00 / 0)
As some of you know, I had an accident Friday. I fell and mangled both of my knees. And I've had to miss some great stuff because of it, including representing Blue Jersey at last night's Monmouth Dems new media training (more on that later).

Anyway, I'm laid up, and channel-flipping. Came across Friends of Mr. Sweeney, now playing on TCM. Had to laugh:

Yarn about a newspaperman (Charles Ruggle) who acquires the courage to fight crooked politicians.

Yeah, had to laugh.
