NJ's precarious environmental situation

by: Adam L

Fri Jul 29, 2011 at 10:10:00 AM EDT

It's good to know that Governor Christie is ok after suffering an asthma attack yesterday.  Luckily, he recognized what it was, had his emergency inhaler and received the necessary treatment so he will be ok.  News reports noted that he has suffered with asthma since he was a teenager.

This may be a good time for Christie to re-examine his views and policies on environmental issues - certainly for his own personal health but also because it is the right thing to do and will kill less people than his current policies would.   A big cause of asthma is outdoor air pollution, and as of 2006 over 500,000 New Jereyans had asthma - close to 200,000 of which were children.

Just like Governor Christie was when he was diagnosed.

Now, I am sure that he didn't think of the consequences to tens of thousands of NJ children every year when he was gutting the State's Department of Environmental Protection, or was pulling the state out of the RGGI.  And what better time to bring up Christie's environmental policies when he has personally been impacted in a scary way?

The folks at Environment New Jersey have a pledge going that promises to support clean air policies and protect our children (like my three year old and four month old) from dangerous air pollution.  The petition is here if you want to sign, and here is their statement on Christie.

And maybe we can all ask the Governor to sign it - or at least support policies that won't make our children sick.  His number is:(609) 292-6000.  And since I've got the day off today, I'll call as well, just because.  Maybe Christie will take my call personally......
