Where Have You Gone Steve Kornacki?

by: taxandspendliberal

During his tenure as PoliticsNJ.com's primary beat reporter, I cannot remember Steve Kornacki ever taking a vacation.  This doesn't mean that he never took one, but he probably timed them during slower periods in the political season.

Meanwhile, Bill Albers has been absent since June 30.  I don't know how attractive the salary and benefits are over at PNJ, but considering the fact that Kornacki was able to parlay his tenure there into a gig over at Roll Call, one would think that even if it isn't a particularly lucrative gig, it is high profile enough for someone to take their job seriously.

And while I understand that in this day and age of non-refundable airline tickets and cancellation fees, it is very difficult for someone to change plans last minute, I find it impossibly hard to understand how someone so new to this job thought it would be a good idea to request a vacation that started on July 1, knowing that there was at least some chance that this morality play, known as the New Jersey state budget process, might run past the deadline, and that over the last week, the actors, literally and figuratively, might decide to take their performances, literally and figuratively, up a notch.

The only thing that baffles me more is how the mystery bosses over at PNJ thought that it made sense to approve his vacation request for this week and when events unfolded the way that they have, didn't say to the guy, "Sorry kid.  You're going to have to stick around.  This is the biggest story out of Trenton since McGreevey resigned."

In fact, there is no doubt in my mind that Steve Kornacki would not only have stuck around and covered the budget dramatics, he would have had the inside dirt on...

...the degree to which the presence of George Norcross has inspired Corzine's and forced Roberts' intransigence,...

...how serious the attempts to overthrow Roberts as Speaker of the Assembly have actually been,...

...and who blinked first when Joe Cryan and Lou Greenwald went nose-to-nose on the floor of the infamous Budget Committee meeting (stereotypes could lead one to believe that the larger Irishman would easily intimidate the smaller and slighter member of my tribe, especially since so many of my formative years were spent being intimidated by larger gentile boys - and occasionally larger gentile girls - but I am willing to bet that in this particular situation, the nerd stood up to the schoolyard bully and would have taken his lunch money if given the opportunity).

With the exception of a few Inside Edge pieces and their regular news citations, PNJ has been virtually dark during Trenton's hottest news week of the year.  I guess that their loss will probably turn out to be Blue Jersey's gain.  I wonder what Steve Kornacki thinks about all of this and if there is any chance that he will give up the glamour and luxury of Roll Call and come back to New Jersey to kick some Trentonian ass.

My guess is that it is as likely as Wally Edge reading this, firing Bill Albers, and hiring me for what would have to be at least twice what I would guess the position's regular salary might be.  I am willing to sacrifice for my craft, but not starve my wife and soon-to-be-born child in the process.

Speaking of Norcross... (0.00 / 0)
Here's a recent opinion piece from the Star Ledger regarding the Don: Norcross casts dark shadow on fiscal crisis.

Also, on the topic of Georges:  Today is George W Bush's birthday.  Let's all bow our heads for a moment of silence in rememberance of this tragic event.

Agreed (0.00 / 0)
I definitely agree about PNJ dropping the ball here.  They had posted (i checked less than an hour ago) that there were rumors of a deal, but nothing more.  Other news outlets had a few more details.  But the whole point of PNJ (as I see it) is that it provides the details you can't get through the regular news outlets.

As for Kornacki, I don't think you can expect this kid to live up to that standard.  His ESPN Page 2 style was perfect for the site.  Albers did post an article today, but the site hasn't been as prolific since he took over.  His style is much more newspaper than fits the "insider" feel of site, but he gets the story across.

I also agree that it is somewhat of an underpaid dream job.  If for some reason, becoming an Esq. doesn't work out, Wally should feel free to give me a call.
