Cheer Up. Things Could be Worse

by: deciminyan

Mon Jun 27, 2011 at 06:00:00 PM EDT

Last week was depressing. On Thursday night, I sat in the New Jersey State Assembly chamber for over 12 hours to witness Chris Christie's greatest political victory in his disastrous reign as our governor.

No doubt, he will continue to brag about his "leadership" ability and the "bipartisan" support he got for the stripping of collective bargaining rights from state workers.

I watched as assembly members I like and admire, people like Lou Greenwald, Pam Lampitt, and Herb Conaway, voted to affirm the path taken not only by Chris Christie, but also Scott Walker, Rick Scott, Rick Snyder, and others of their ilk.

deciminyan :: Cheer Up. Things Could be Worse
My sadness turned to joy on Friday night as I watched another legislative body, the New York State Senate, affirm basic human rights by passing a marriage equality law in the Empire State. But just as quickly, our bigoted governor in New Jersey asserted that he "does not believe in" gay marriage.

So as bad as things are in New Jersey, next year could be worse. If Democrats and Progressives stay out of the next election cycle, we could have a Republican legislature in New Jersey which would be a rubber stamp for the Chris Christie/Koch Brothers regressive agenda. Can you imagine an Assembly Budget Committee chaired by Declan O'Scanlon who promotes right-to-work laws? Can you imagine a Senate President Tom Kean Jr who would go even further in giving tax breaks to the wealthy? It would be a nightmare.

The primary season is behind us, so it's too late to recruit and groom Democratic candidates who are not under the influence of the South Jersey/Essex County axis of evil. But by not supporting the Christiecrats who disappointed us, we are making it easier for Republicans to have a monopoly on the reins of power in Trenton.

So how do we encourage Progressive voters to hold their nose and vote for the faulty Democrats in November? We can take a page out of the Tea Party playbook and use a wedge issue to energize the electorate and get out the vote.

Clearly, that issue has to be marriage equality. Marriage equality is a fundamental right that shouldn't have to be legislated, but unfortunately the real world does not recognize it as such. Since that fight will be an uphill battle as long as Chris Christie is governor, let's make the best of it. Marriage equality is more important than just as a wedge issue, but if we can leverage it as such, we should.

As evidenced in New York and elsewhere, public opinion on same sex marriage is changing. You can count on the fact that Tea Partiers and bigots will be voting in November - we need to be able to counter that.  The younger generation is moving in the right direction on marriage equality, and it is important to get them to the polling places, especially in the 2011 off-year.

Despite the fact that any bill promoting equal rights would be vetoed by our governor, Democrats should introduce and push for marriage equality legislation now. Let's get every legislator on the record, with a vote, and those who vote NO (who will be primarily Republicans) should be punished at the ballot box by an invigorated electorate. Getting out the vote to defeat Republicans in 2011 is better than giving Christie even more power. And by doing so as a voting bloc, we send a clear message to the Christiecrats that if they don't change their anti-worker stance, they will be primaried and will lose in 2013.

Doing nothing elects Republicans.

Supporting a third party candidate elects Republicans.

As bad as they are, Christiecrats are better than Republicans. So 2011 is the year of supporting the "good" Democrats and holding our nose in voting for Christiecrats, all to prevent a Republican majority. Now is the time to show support for the pro-worker legislators like Joe Cryan and Loretta Weinberg, to elect those new progressives that are already on the ballot like Marie Corfield, and to work toward retaining the majority taking back the governor's office, and ensuring worker's rights and marriage equality in 2013.

Don't vote for any "Christiecrat" (0.00 / 0)
I'm sorry, but your argument, "things could be worse," is a totally defeatist one.  But it will bring a smile to the faces of the likes of Sweeney, Oliver, and Bosses Norcross and Adubato.  Things will never change in this party with that line of thinking.  It's an argument for the status quo.

Betrayal must have consequences.  Or else those doing the betrayal will have no incentive to stop.  I urge everyone in districts with a Christiecrat on the ballot not to vote for them.  Vote for a third party or stay home.  But don't reward them.  And I urge everyone else to contact your Democratic candidates and ask them not to vote for Sweeney and Oliver for leader.

We respectfully disagree (0.00 / 0)
You may call my argument "defeatist" and there's some truth to that. But I believe my reasoning is more pragmatic than defeatist. A Republican majority in either house would be a disaster (see: US Congress).

How do we school them? (0.00 / 0)
If the people who are supposed to support us continue to get our support when they do the amount of damage they just did in stealing bargaining rights, what lesson do they learn?
That we really our weak and that we'll kneel for anything they say as long as they tie a small "d" at the end of their names?

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.

The most disgusting thing of all is that they did this FULL WELL KNOWING that we are boxed in with NO RECOURSE but to vote for them for the reasons you already gave.  If this isn't a page out of Rove, I don't know what is.  I don't know if I can sell my soul as they have to vote for them again.  I really don't know.  And besides, it seems MANY of my fellow public workers voted Christie in there in the first place, they can work on it from here, I'm done.  I thought I was disgusted with Bush's 2nd term, but this betrayal outstrips that by light years.

There is no political party to represent me now.

What's worse (0.00 / 0)
is that Christie has been groomed as Bush III for some time now, and so far it's working out for them. It hasn't peaked yet, but Christie's stock has not taken any significant drops or surges yet, but slowly upticks.

If I have any role (0.00 / 0)
as some kind of cheerleader or organizer for shoeleather for Democrats, I'm off duty right now.

I will, however, work my ass off for some heroes and heroines that I'm familiar with. And some up-and-comers who deserve everything I've got.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

You captured the mood Rosi. (0.00 / 0)
So few electeds worth the effort of the many on our side, and so many electeds  supporting the few not worth the effort.

Sorry to disagree deciminyan, but marriage equality would not be the wedge issue of choice. Even 'politically reserved until the numbers are in' Christie knows that, otherwise he would not have publicly taken a stance on the issue. Christie knows where to place his chips and hedge his bets. I'm of the opinion that our greatest strength sometimes is also our greatest weakness.

What's the point in supporting Dems. when... (0.00 / 0)
I will find it very hard to vote for my State Sen. and Assemblyman who voted against labor. As of now, NO WAY. By the way, Fred Madden, (Dem. Sen. from my district) voted against marriage equality rights in'10.

mmgth

Don't vote for them (0.00 / 0)
And Moriarity is a horrible assemblyman.

Revealing quote from inside the Democratic caucus (0.00 / 0)

Sources said Democrats argued in caucus, with some lawmakers calling out their colleagues for handing Gov. Chris Christie the votes he needs at every turn to execute his conservative agenda.

Even many of them can't swallow the "things could be worse" philosophy.

Cheer up folks. Christiecrats kill NJN News (0.00 / 0)
No Michael Aron, etc., and the others who do fine work on the show.  To be replaced by Rafael Pi Roman and a bunch of talking heads on the Adubato station.  It will be all Stevie Jr. all the time.

If a gun was held to my head (0.00 / 0)
and I had to choose to watch Adubato Jr. or listen to Gearhart, I would listen to Gearhart....Jr's narcissism is unwatchable

Mostly a moot point (3.00 / 2)
The machine-Dems that have been helping the governor out are mostly untouchable anyway - thanks to redistricting designed to protect them. The way things are set up now, they are virtually unbeatable in the primary and unbeatable in the general - that's why the Bosses can basically do whatever they want - and they want a lot...

There is nothing Democratic about a Machine.
