When is a Town Hall Meeting Like a Presidential Campaign?

Gov Christie Town Hall Fair LawnGov. Christie speaking at Fair Lawn town hall meeting

(When it's interrupted by LaRouche supporters, and the guest of honor comes and goes by helicopter? h/t JRBoh)

I had the pleasure of being inside the governor's town hall meeting in Fair Lawn yesterday. And although I'll probably never be a restaurant or movie critic, I'm going to take a stab at a political review of the event. (You can go back and read my question-by-question livetweet of the event on Twitter.)

So, here goes: For starters, as someone who had never before seen Governor Christie in person, but had seen a few too many YouTube videos of him, I have to say it was somewhat surreal.

The setting was a large and packed gymnasium with a definite mix of friendlies and unfriendlies, among a crowd that seemed unusually white, if I'm being honest. However, critics who accuse the Governor of hand-selecting the audience or the topics would have been hardpressed to make that case yesterday, as he basically went 0 for 8 in search of a friendly question.

Unfortunately, I was not one of the 8, although I had wormed my way to the front of the room (hence, the upclose pic w/my blackberry), and thought I might just get called on if I raised my hand high enough. No such luck. My question was going to be about transparency - along the lines of today's piece on Philly.com about Christie's refusal to reveal who funded his national political barnstorming tour last year, much as he's refusing to reveal information about the taxpayer-funded helicopter junkets he's been taking? So I was going to ask:

Where is it you've been traveling? Who is it you've been traveling with? And why is it that the taxpayers who have been footing the bill aren't being given these answers?

Maybe someday we'll find out. But, it was not to be yesterday. Meanwhile - the rest of my review, and the final grade, is on the flip side. :)

I have to say - again, sorry critics - the Governor was very respectful. And funny. He nailed quite a few zingers, some rehearsed and some off-the-cuff, but definitely funny. He worked the "we're all from Jersey" angle a little hard if you ask me. But when you've got the Sopranos' Johnny Sack sitting in the front row, you might just find you have Jersey on your mind.

The stage was something of a who's-who of Bergen County Republican politicians (and, um, county employees, or both). But, if they were hoping for introductions, it was not to be - this was 100% the Chris Christie show. And, he had a message to deliver, which he opened with, returned to repeatedly, and closed with: that New Jersey politicians on both sides of the aisle have come together to support his "reform" plans, and that unlike the bitter partisan divide in Washington, how wonderful it is here in New Jersey where Democrats and Republicans are working together (to implement his agenda).

I said before that the pension bill passed by the Senate and now before the Assembly was bad politics for Democrats. It's obvious the Governor sees it's great politics for him. Expect to hear much more of this "coming together to solve big problems" rhetoric - nevermind if the big problems remain unsolved. It's all about the optics anyway.

Overall, I'd give the town hall a C-plus (he could have nailed a B-minus if he didn't depart from the event by helicopter, but choices have consequences - optics, don't you know).

Sounds like same script, (0.00 / 0)
different audience from the one I was at in November. It appears the Q&A format has changed from lining up at the mike to raising hands. In Washington Twp (Gloucester County) the crowd was was more Christie-friendly but not prescreened. A grand total of two individuals did not stand and applaud at his every word - myself and my friend (a blogger whose name begins with "D" and ends with "n").
