Fire the CWA VP Now

by: Jersey Jazzman

Fri Jun 17, 2011 at 06:00:00 AM EDT

This was posted very early this morning, before News Roundup, so maybe not everybody has seen it. Just pulling it back up top for a short while for those who missed it; the discussion in comments is interesting - Rosi

Unbelievably stupid:

In an explosive tirade that fired up some demonstrators and embarrassed others, a national union leader went nuclear on Gov. Chris Christie, calling him a Nazi over and over.

"Welcome to Nazi Germany," Christopher Shelton, a top official at the Communication Workers of America, told thousands of protesters today outside the Statehouse in Trenton. "The first thing that the Nazis and Adolf Hitler did was go after the unions."

In an extreme example of disaffection with both parties, Shelton also went after Senate President Stephen Sweeney (D-Gloucester) and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver (D-Essex).

"Adolf Christie's generals," he called them, because both are backing a bill that would increase pension and health benefit costs for public workers.

Gee, Mr. Shelton, do you think that maybe the Christie cabal might use this? If you had been paying attention, you would know that Christie has a knack for harping on this kind of stuff over and over again.

We can't afford this kind of distraction - not now. Shelton's resignation needs to be on someone's desk this morning. If he doesn't write it, fire him.

Otherwise, yesterday was in vain.

Over the top. A distraction. But not fireable (0.00 / 0)
And, historically, correct.

The Republicans and their teabaggers have no problem screaming "socialism" about everything.  They never have to apologize, or resign.  Why should Shelton for screaming fascism?

Not equivalent (0.00 / 0)
Many decent people who support democracy and tolerance call themselves "Socialists." Sen Bernie Sanders of VT is a Socialist. Many mainstream political parties in Europe are Socialist parties.

No decent person calls himself a Nazi.

Besides, do we really want to set the bar so low that we compare our ethics to Republicans?

Shelton Shouldn't Have Made the Comment (0.00 / 0)

But it's not like that's the reason Christie/Sweeney passed the bill yesterday.

Christie/Sweeney and apologists for them want to jump on Shelton as a distraction from the core issues.  Don't let them.  Shelton doesn't need to be fired.   Stick to the core issues like how the bill denies people medical care and enriches politicians and their bosses at the public worker's expense.

Get used to this: (0.00 / 0)
"And at their rally, they called me Adolph Hitler. And said Democratic leaders - people from their own patry! - were Nazis.

"That kind of speech has no place in New Jersey. And when I called for Shelton's firing, the CWA said "no." So I'm not dealing with them until they get real leaders. They are thugs, just like the NJEA."

That practically wrote itself. You will hear it over and over again.

Can we afford that?

Yes we can afford it. (4.00 / 2)

You don't go around firing your friends in times like this when they misspeak.

The idea that our cause will be defined by what one person said on one day means that we have few supporters in the legislature.   Let's stick to our ideas.  And ignore this.

Curling up in a fetal position because of fear about what someone with a sub-50% approval rating might say is not the way to go about things.

Kudos (0.00 / 0)
to Senator Lesniak. I like the fact that he immediately took issue with the comments before waiting to see 'which way the political wind' was blowing.

This shows a massive lack of judgement (0.00 / 0)
Invoking Hitler and Naziism is always a bad idea.  Doing it with this level of vitriol and anger -- and apparent premeditation -- is moronic and shows a lack of judgement.  Any union leader who has a public face and is willing to be this stupid should at the least be demoted to a back room where he never sees a microphone again.

See, everyone can play together some time!  :-)

Passion and Protocol (4.00 / 1)
Was it a poorly used anaology? Yes. Shelton could have used less incendiary comparatives because of how painful the WHOLE of the Hitler history is BUT his anaology was accurate in so much that the whole of the country is under a union killing assault led by the GOP and now given legs by Democrats in New Jersey.

The analogy refers to the method of stealing all power and support from the one thing Hitler feared most in Germany, Organized Labor. He did order the disbandment of all Unions. All we are seeing now is a back-door effort towards the same ends; The end of organized labor and collective bargaining.

Mr. Shelton has apologized and his anology ONLY compared the current assault on organized labor to Hitler's attacks on organized labor and made no comparison to Hitlers wholesale genocide on the Jewish, Gay, Black and "Unfit" of Germany.

Stop buying into this distraction and grow your common sense. We all say stupid and sometimes innappropriate things when in a fog of passion. remember, many of his closest advisors, partners, advocates and friends are Jewish, Black, Hispanic and Gay.

There are a lot of people who need to grow up and grow a set because if you let the outside forces destroy your internal leadership through petty and manufactured distractions, you will win nothing and lose everything.

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.

Apologist! (4.00 / 1)
The only peopel still trying to spin thsi are afew of the fools at CWA and a couple of peopel still on this site.
Shame..

This is kind of rude from me ... (0.00 / 0)
but it takes one to know one.  Given your history on this site, I don't have a lot of sympathy for you calling anyone an apologist.

[ Parent ]
Would we forgive a repub. for making similar remarks? (0.00 / 0)
Maybe, but we'd never forget it.

Next week teachers will have their chance to set their cause back even further-- what is this tent city that's going to be set up?   Suffering catfish! A little history can be a dangerous thing.

If only this Hitler thing would be the end of such nonsense . . .

Watch some of the vids without sound--can you tell they're not footage of a tea party?

Fighting stupid with stupid, eh?

Here's a new approach for us all, dignity, tact, maturity--or humor, at least!

And those chants--who likes to hear "Kill Bill" or "No Roger, No Rerun, No rent," or "Ape has killed ape."

I didn't post the Union label lyrics as a gag--that's damn fine song--catchy, stirring, and responsible.

Can't the NJEA hire a songwriter or decent jinglemonger?

Hey, Hey NJEA how many kids did you teach today--nah, that stinks.

Unlike CC, I'm not much of Bruce fan, but I bet he could do something that would work. "I'm in love with Jersey teachers." (Tom Waits would throw a fit.) Hey there's another idea, big stars, ones that nonunion people dig.  Good looking ones.  Better yet, hire actors to demonstrate while teachers go to work.

And if you must be led out of a place, handcuffed and chanting, then why not Conga!

No, you don't nerd new songs (0.00 / 0)
Sing the good old ones, they're the ones everyone likes to see on YouTube. And don't be camera shy, get a good video guy to capture all your smiling faces. Try to doube your efforts of Thursday and get 2000 people there. Get up right in front of the State House, not down State St.

inspring speeches (0.00 / 0)
what ever happened to inspiring speeches that didn't contain personal insults and inappropriate analogies?

There's a problem with Shelton's speech if the only thing people remember is the fact he mentioned the Nazis.

What do you think of when you think of the famous speeches that MLK Jr, JFK, and Obama have made? I'm sure you could even quote a few lines of the "I have a dream" speech, or JFK's inauguration speech, or Obama's old convention speech from when he was Senator. To me, the best speeches in history have a pretty positive tone. Shelton's speech seemed to have a ton of negativity and hatred.

Shelton has apologized for invoking Nazis the other day.  Now I would give him a chance to apologize again and to come up with something truly inspiring that has a good chance of convincing members of the legislature and the other taxpayers that collective bargaining should be saved. If he can't, then he needs to go.
