Kathy Hochul wins in NY-26 - another loss for Christie

Kathy HochulBring me the finest muffins and bagels in all the land!

In a week of sinking poll numbers for Gov. Chris Christie, and a Supreme Court ruling this morning that his deep slashes to NJ public schools was unconstitutional, the results of an election 383 miles away from Trenton is almost as fist-pumping awesome.

Kathy Hochul, whose chances were slim a few weeks ago, has just won a special election for the NY-26 seat being vacated by GOP Rep. Chris Lee, the married shirtless wonder who got caught trying to pick up chicks on craigslist.

Jane Corwin, the Republican, was supposed to win. But then, she saw that sure thang dissolve after she came out in favor of Paul Ryan's plan to remake Medicare.

Why does this matter to us? In addition to the fact it's a Democratic pick-up, every one of the GOP members of the NJ congressional delegation also backed the Ryan plan. They won't be made to pay for that until 2012, but Hochul's victory pumps up those expectations big-time.

Most of all, after a year of Governor Chris Christie play-acting on the national stage, with nothing really at stake for him, he finally got invited to play with the Big Dog this week. And fell on his face. It was Christie the Republicans picked to go up against President Bill "My name is Bill Clinton and I AM the President" Clinton in a battle of the robo-calls, a request you have to figure came via Karl Rove, who was heavily leveraged in this race for Corwin. And Christie's involvement didn't help pull a victory for his Party. [ Makes sad clown face ].

Big ups for our friends at The Albany Project, and to all the New Yorkers who drove this win.

Turning Tides (4.00 / 2)
It goes to show that a good candidate, with a well run campaign, even in the toughest district, can win. It's clear voters in NY-26 rejected the Republicans' plan to gut Medicare and turn it into an inadequate voucher program.

I'll fight to protect Medicare every day I'm in office.

Ok, that's it (0.00 / 0)
Let this be the inspiration to win one of NJ's so-called "red" seats next year. Noun, verb, Medicare. Win.

not just next year, what about this year? (0.00 / 0)
Of course I looked at this race with great hopes for Monmouth County.

The first step... (0.00 / 0)
...towards turning a red seat blue should be lobbying for a more competitive congressional district map.  This means that incumbent Democrats should be willing to represent more competitive districts and possibly be willing to go head-to-head with their Republican colleagues.

I would love to see a map that puts Bill Pascrell, Jr. and/or Steve Rothman in the same district as Scott Garrett and/or Rodney Frelinghuysen.  Or how about putting Rush Holt, Leonard Lance, and Chris Smith in the same district?  Doing this would create open seats that would also be more competitive.

Or we can continue to cede these decisions to the party insiders and hope for the best.  How has that worked for progressives so far?

Lesson for NJ Dems (4.00 / 2)
A 21-county strategy can work - especially now.

In one post!  Well done, Rosi!!

To second deciminyan and Ed P, a well organized campaign that assumes nothing and asks everyone for their vote is a successful strategy.

Victory 2011!!
