Trenton Chief of Staff Sigmund headed to rehab?

by: Rosi Efthim

Wed May 04, 2011 at 12:18:15 PM EDT

For the guy helping the mayor run the city, a heroin arrest with sidebar resisting arrest and assault of a police officer charges is a pretty damned bad news situation. Word is Paul Sigmund is headed to rehab. Hope so. And politics & city management aside, it's hard not to wish him the best.

Now, Tony Mack, time to address some problems ... it's all you, man.

I agree (0.00 / 0)
he is obviously is an addict and needs help.

He needs to be fired, however.  It is not like he has been working there for 10 years and has a solid reputation.  He has been there only a few months.  He got caught driving unlicensed at 90 mph in a city owned vehicle recently as well.  He arrived in Trenton with this problem.

Tony Mack and the city of Trenton have enough problems without this embarassing mess.  I really do have compassion for Mr. Sigmunds problems, but politically, the City of Trenton needs to terminate him and move on to solving other problems.

Sigmund Out? Maybe (0.00 / 0)
The City of Trenton's business administrator announced mid-afternoon yesterday that Paul Sigmund had been dismissed from city employ.

Later the same afternoon the Mayor's Office claimed Sigmund was still on unpaid leave and had not been dismissed.

The current rumor is (0.00 / 0)
that Sigmund will tender his resignation today but it will be post dated so that he actually ends his employment at the 60 day mark, enabling him to receive health benefits. If this occurs as is projected, it's gonna be a debacle of even more epic proportions that one usually encounters coming out of 319 E. State (City Hall).

Epic irony - Sigmund was to meet with the DCA to discuss the City's vetting process, but was arrested five hours before that meeting was to occur ...

Times Editorial on Timing of Resignation (0.00 / 0)
He needs to be fired now, not after he qualifies for health insurance. So sayeth the editoial Board of the Times of Trenton (of the NJ Times, or whatever they call themselves), and most City activists. The Mayor, however, still waffles.

One last comment (0.00 / 0)
Kevin Moriarty (who sometimes posts here at BlueJersey) wraps up his feelings on the Sigmund matter, but more to the point, check the link in Kevin's blog to Trentonian columnist L.A. Parker's column:

L.A., who is himself in recovery, verifies what I've been hearing for the past six weeks - right from Jump Street, Sigmund's probable substance abuse problem did not escape the notice of many (excepting, I guess, the Mayor) in the orbit of City Hall. George Muschal, now City Council president, was a Trenton street cop for many many years, and apparently he, LA, and others experienced with addicts thought sumthin' was up with Sigmund big time. Sadly, they were right, both for Paul and the City.

But now, he needs to resign - now - and not stick the City for the cost of his treatment. Though I'm sure it will be a burden to his family, the son of a Princeton professor emeritus, nephew of a nationally known news correspondent, and grandson of Louisiana US Senators, can probably scrape together the gelt to cover 90 days in a comfortable facility. The City of Trenton probably cannot.

Not with a bang (0.00 / 0)
Sigmund has reportedly resigned this morning. This time I think it's going to stick.
