May 12-14: 16th Annual New Jersey Democratic State Conference

by: Rosi Efthim

Fri Apr 29, 2011 at 04:03:09 PM EDT

If you're planning to get your Democrat on at the Democratic State Conference in AC, you've got about 24 hours to register at the discounted rate of $111. This year's conference focuses on training and new media. And with Christie's favorables crumbling under the weight of his own aggression, and a well-financed NJGOP gearing up to give Christie the Republican legislature he's asked for, it seems to me it's a good time for 3 days of putting our heads together and muscling up. I'm a huge proponent of skills training. It's a good time for the DSC to focus on that right now, and good that this conference comes in May, not September.

So, if you weren't planning on going, there may be a few reasons to rethink. In the post-Christie universe, there could be a lot of value in rank-and-file progressive activists showing up. If there's a struggle for the soul of the Democratic Party, it is between those leaders whose sense of mission is unshakable in the face of a headline-grabbing cocksure governor and those for whom forward movement is challenged by that cocksure governor whose own party marches in lockstep behind him. This is the struggle that plays out here at Blue Jersey every day.

And I think it would be good if more of 'us' showed up to what is traditionally a party 'insiders' gathering. Some in Democratic leadership are doing us proud. They deserve high-fives in person. And for those we may think are going offtrack, shall we say, they deserve to know we'll have their backs if they face down Christie with the same vigor he shows them.

Keynote speaker hasn't been announced yet. But look at the training part:

  • Winning as a Local Candidate - make the fundraising ask, build campaign finances and get your message out using social media.

  • New Media & Communications - using interactive exercises to build your own Facebook & Twitter campaigns, mastering the art of earned and "free" media, managing a simulated press situation with your team under challenging circumstances.

  • Field Tactics, Targeting and Technology - fine tune your ground game, manage the voter file, microtargeting and new, cutting edge organizing tools & technologies.

It's all in the Tropicana Casino & Resort, so there's also that whole slightly cheesy, glitzy Atlantic City thang to enjoy, plus receptions, coffee and dessert parties and various chances to hobnob and hang out. And the conference rate for rooms if you stay over is very affordable. All the info:

    Just wondering (0.00 / 0)
Rosi, where's State Senator Loretta Weinberg's column? I heard there'd be one.

"the black sheep can wear the golden fleece and hold a winning hand" Tim Hardin

The Senator usually posts on Monday mornings (0.00 / 0)
(not 1AM!) but I have no knowledge of her plans.
