When asked to compare the state of broadcast journalism today with that of decades ago, television commentator Rachel Maddow remarked that there are no Walter Cronkites today, and she did not expect one to arise in the foreseeable future.

Cronkite established his reputation as "the most trusted man in America." He was a conventional hard news reporter and Maddow is an opinionated commentator. Yet despite these differences, one could legitimately argue that Maddow is filling Cronkite's shoes. When fact-based broadcast news is a rare commodity, Maddow's nightly program on MSNBC is one of the few that I trust.

more after the fold...

deciminyan :: Rachel at Rutgers
Under the sponsorship of Rutgers' Eagleton Institute of Politics, Maddow appeared this morning on the Cook Campus at an event hosted by Eagleton and moderated by its Director, Ruth Mandel.

Maddow started off with remarks about the production of the nightly show. The Oxford PhD clearly enjoys what she is doing, and said she considers her job more as one of explaining the complexity of the news rather than  simply reporting it. The most difficult part of her job, she explained, is deciding which stories to include for in-depth analysis. Programming decisions are made up to the last minute, and often guests are sent home while the show is on the air, having been pre-empted by other news. Maddow established her nerd credentials when she revealed that for relaxation she listens to CDs of lectures by Richard Feynman explaining the basis of his Nobel Prize in physics. She also said that she does not watch television news, preferring British comedy for her TV fare. She stressed the independence of the program's editorial decisions from the corporate sponsorship pointing out several stories that were critical of General Electric, up until recently the majority owner of MSNBC (and even today, GE owns 49% of that network.) While ratings are important in their ability to attract guests (she called ratings her "political capital"), there is a 100% wall of separation between the host and the show's sponsors.

During the question and answer session, Maddow was asked to discuss the most important under-reported story. Without hesitation, she replied Pakistan and the secret wars that are ongoing there. We have given their military billions of dollars, she pointed out, and that money has been used to create facilities for Pakistan's nuclear weapons program. Maddow asserted that Americans are saturated with war news, and that's why we don't see much reporting on Pakistan, although she hopes to be able to report from there some day. Another area that she feels is being given too little attention in the mainstream media is the resumption of permits for oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico without any significant safety improvements - a topic that has been on some recent shows of hers.

She lamented the demise of the Republican party pointing out to the unholy alliance of social conservatives (whose agenda she categorized as "deep but not wide") and the business world that is driven by a financial agenda.

When asked what it was like to be a gay journalist on the national scene, Maddow said she didn't know - "I've never done my job as a straight person."

In response to a question from an Eagleton student, Maddow pointed out that the traditional liberal/conservative blocs are changing. For example, the pressure to cut defense spending is coming from different areas of the ideological spectrum. As the nature of war shifts from large and expensive weapons systems like the now-cancelled F-22 program to counterinsurgency efforts, the nation needs to and is taking a critical look at this area.

Maddow claims she has an opinion but not an agenda, and I believe this is an accurate description of her style. On her show, she spends a lot of time explaining complex issues, and she admits that sometimes she gets a bit too cute in using analogies and props, but that's what helps her with her message. Although at the end of today's presentation she was whisked off the stage to get back to New York to produce tonight's show, I feel I was in the presence of a person who will go down as one of the icons of broadcast news during the time that the whole paradigm of news delivery is changing right before our eyes. I only wish that she could have commented on President Obama's budget message which was delivered four hours after the Eagleton event. I guess I'll have to tune in at 9 o'clock tonight.

It was actually the Douglass Campus (0.00 / 0)
Not Cook. :)

Does it count... (0.00 / 0)
... if I parked my car on the Cook campus and walked over?

Let us hope that she earned as much (0.00 / 0)
as Snookie did.

I doubt it (0.00 / 0)
While I agree with the spirit of what Kyrillos has said about this debacle, I think that his solution would be tantamount to defunding student activities, which would be wrong.

A better solution would be to require administration/faculty approval and/or some kind of online petition process to spend more than $1,000 on any non-academic activity.

Limiting student autonomy is not the answer (0.00 / 0)
While RUPA should resign enmasse or students should demand a recall vote after the combined RutgersFest & Snooki fiascoes, taking away student decision-making is not the answer.

Students fought a long and hard battle over many years to gain the rights to control their own programming decisions at Rutgers.

When Rutgers first encountered diversity in the early 70's, it was very difficult for students to get permission for speakers and entertainers that reflected the growing African-American and Puerto Rican populations at the school.

Hopefully, someone involved in those battles is now making the RUPA aware of that.

So while the current students on the programming board seem to be tone-deaf and incompetent and their decisions are negatively impacting the broader university, stripping student autonomy strips away rights that were fought for by earlier generations of Rutgers students.

You are right about how making student fees opt-in would kill student activities. It would not only kill entertainment and lectures but also "public spaces" like computer labs and some writing center/writing assistance programs.

I also believe that student fees pay for some services and staffing at the school's commuter lounges.

It's a slippery slope once you start making the tuition bill ala carte.

Rachel Was Brilliantly Outstanding On Air America.... (0.00 / 0)
...and continues to be on MSNBC.  I agree with you that she can become someone as loved, respected and admired as Cronkite.   She's still so young!

I remember hearing her do the morning show with two guys on Air America and always wishing they would just shut up and let her talk more!

Rachel also did a great interview with Camille Abate at Ramapo college way back in May of 2008, as I recall she was very aware of the problems associated with machine politics and pay to play.

Would love to see Maddow follow Al Franken (another Air America  veteran) in to he Senate!!!

Air America radio show hosted by:

Lizz Winstead, Chuck D and Rachel.  (All pretty brilliant.)

And no, she shouldn't go into politics.  She should be doing what she is doing, perhaps with a broader platform - like MTP.

Rachel Was/Is More Brilliant..... (0.00 / 0)
..imho of course  ;-)

I recall that after Liz left there was a spell where Rachel was on Morning Sedition with two men, maybe one was Marc Maron....and they were always cutting up to the max while she was actually trying to do some serious news analysis and commentary....and I do recall wishing they would shut up as her stuff was more engaging than their humor.

Of course I could be mistaken.

The bottom line is that Maddow is an extraordinarily talented individual with all manner of likable and admirable attributes who deserves to become a superstar in the news biz........and, forgive me for wishing it on her.......but I still believe we need super smart, likable, talented and gutsy people in politics.   I understand that for Maddow, politics would be a kind of step down, and that she will likely never be interested.......but I still would love to see her in the Senate and maybe even become the first woman president!   Now wouldn't THAT be cool!   :-)

Rachel started on Unfiltered (4.00 / 1)
with Liz Winsted and Chuck D.  The Young Turks had Cenk Uger, Jill Pike, and Ben Mankiewicz.  Morning Sedition was on with Mark Maron, NJ's own Mark Riley and Kent Jones doing hilarious voice over bits.

I really miss Mark Maron. He was a great way to start the day.  And Rachel was just amazing right at the very start.  Sam Seder was on majority report in the evening with Jeanine Garafalo. Sam recently filled in for Keith Olberman occasionally.

So, although Air America is no more, the really great hosts have found homes - in the Senate or on MSNBC where they can reach a lot more people.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

You might be mixing up... (4.00 / 1)
...Rachel with Sue Ellicot, who, for the first few months of the show, co-hosted "Morning Sedition" with Marc Maron and Mark Riley. Ellicot is a British journalist who knows her stuff, but the chemistry between her and the guys wasn't great.
Or, you might be remembering that Rachel did half of the hourly news updates on Morning Sedition. But I think that was at the same time she was co-hosting "Unfiltered".

Thanks for the details Bill.... (0.00 / 0)
.....There was some juxtaposition of Maddow's truly insightful and smart analysis/commentary with Maron's weird and sometimes warped "humor" that rubbed me the wrong way.   Obviously, in this case, the marketplace agreed with me...Rachel's star is rising with no end in sight!  She's young and has a great future ahead of her in Journalism and, I dare hope, in public service.

I want folks like Racel Maddow making policy as well as just commenting on it!!!

I remember that day. (4.00 / 2)
I was there and was introduced to Rachel by Camille.  That was when I was running for Freeholder and was blogging away on Blue Jersey about Joe Ferriero.

Rachel told me she had read Blue Jersey to understand the Jersey politics scene before the interview with Camille.  This was way before she had her own show.  I had been a fan since day one of her show on Air America.

So, Rachel has been aware of Blue Jersey for quite some time :)

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Backstory (4.00 / 2)
The backstory here is that a young Eagleton student, Julie Nutter, did an interning stint for Rachel's show while Julie was a student at Rutgers/Eagleton. After graduation, Julie got a job as a production assistant on Rachel's show, and at the recent event Rachel introduced Julie and spoke very highly of her.

Ahhh, more satire (0.00 / 0)
I can tell my humor is catching! Maddow=Cronkite! Yes! YES! YESSSSSSSS!

I'm sure everyone in the Tea Party agrees. That's why Maddow is universally accepted, and why John Boehner quotes her so often.

And little duckies shoot out Barack Obama's butt every time he passes gas.
