LD-8: Lunch with Lewis

by: Rosi Efthim

UPDATE: Ms. Addiego declines ...

Olympic gold-medalist Carl Lewis' decision to run for state Senate in New Jersey's Eighth District made all kinds of national news. You'd expect that. Politics can be a dull business, which is one reason why extreme characters get the big spotlight. But people famous for something else also tend to get the big rush from the press, and Carl Lewis is no different; an extraordinarily talented guy jumping into politics as a Democrat? Yeah, I'm interested - very.

But here, Lewis' entry into the race sparked a 43-comment thread (so far) tacked onto Deciminyan's coverage of his announcement. And that makes some sense, too. At issue is what Carl Lewis, who grew up in New Jersey and bought a house here again in 2005, plans to run on. Who is he politically?  He just registered to vote here this week, so there's not that much to go on.

We just got a hint of what Lewis' political style might be, though not his substance. Carl Lewis' opening salvo in the LD-8 race is to invite his competitor, the GOP's incumbent Senator Dawn Addiego, to lunch. I'd like to be surprised and see her do that, because that would be a fund convo to eavesdrop on. But what he seems to have in mind is a pleasant tone.

"I look forward to meeting Sen. Addiego in an informal setting so we can get to know one another as our campaigns begin. [snip] I am determined to run a campaign that engages the voters and makes them proud of our political system, not cynical and turned off by it," Lewis said. "One of the greatest legacies we can leave our children is the kind of civil, honest and, yes, spirited election process that our founding fathers envisioned when they created this great democracy.

And so it goes.

Empty Dawn (0.00 / 0)
Dawn Addiegio, who was gifted her current job by local party bosses, could probably stand to learn a thing or two from someone who earned 9 Olympic gold medals.

It's too bad she'll probably decline -- via her spokesman and political brian -- in a snarky matter.

But we still know NOTHING (2.50 / 2)
Carl Lewis is still a total unknown. All we know is that he likes republicans, wants to be friends and enjoys discussing stuff over lunch.

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.

Confused (3.00 / 2)
I don't think he is a Democrat because all that founding fathers' talk is sounding alot like our all time favorite Tea Party representative, Bachman!  He sure does love those Republicans. Now we can have "Hot and Sexy" and "Fast and Speedy".

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

I want to thank Rosi for pointing out the 43-comment thread (which I missed somehow).  Very entertaining way to start my morning.

On the merits, my inclination is to give Mr. Lewis a chance to define his candidacy and positions on issues important to all of us progressives.  Then folks can make a determination of whether or not to get behind him.

All that said, sometimes campaigns are about more than just the candidate.  If Mr. Lewis can excite folks in the 8th, raise money for the 8th, and do it in a way that is constructive -- as opposed to destructive -- I'm willing to take a listen.

upside with no downside (0.00 / 0)
If Lewis wins and is another Beach, Norcross, or Van Drew, he is still no worse than Dawn Addiego, unless someone forgot to tell me that she is the second coming of Bill Baroni.

Also, if Lewis does well in LD8, he could help his Assemblymates.  As I have said before, this is much ado about nothing.  Let him run and whatever happens, happens.  No harm; no foul.

Why the hell can't Dem voters DEMAND better (0.00 / 0)
This "At least he/she is better than (insert republican name here)" has gotten us exactly where we are now... Fighting for our damned liberal lives.

Accepting At least he's better than" isn't good enough.

When does the funeral dirge cease and the war chant begin?

If we don't stand together, we fall alone

Fresh Face is good (0.00 / 0)
I think he will do just fine. That District is a long shot and Mr.Lewis will draw needed attention.

The arm chair progressives on this site do not like him because he was backed by Sweeney.

It is easy to sit back and blame others from the comfort of a reclining chair.

Give Mr. Lewis some credit for getting out there and trying.

... if Stephen Sweeneys hand was up it's keester.

You need someCchapstick for those lips so firmly planted on Sweeney's posterior.

Why do all you arm chair progresives get personal when you are wrong?

No, just honest (0.00 / 0)
Your loyalties seem to lie with people who have hurt and damaged CWA and Labor Organizing as a whole.
Rumor has it your a disenfranchised C. Kats fan who can't accept that she misused and mispent her way out of office.
Now you spend more time bringing doubt to an organization steeped in a fight against both Christie and your personal lord and saviour, Sweeney (or the Sweeney/Norcross hybrid beast of croneyism).
You have near zero credibility in the argument because you support those who would weaken, not strengthen labors voice for personal gain and aggrandizement.

You may not like the blunt language but the analogies are fairly accurate.

I've read many of your previous diaries and there are two constants... You're usually on the wrong side of the argument in regards to political friends and foes and you're no friend of labor with your willingness to sell it to legislation.

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.

Why don't you come right and say who you are, firstamend?

In what you write at Blue Jersey, you flack for Sweeney, and disparage every aspect of CWA. You are dedicated enough in this pursuit that it would appear you do in an official capacity.

You've got plenty of opinions and like to characterize people here as "armchair progressives". But "armchair" would seem to describe you more than almost all of us.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

What is it about demoCRAPS like Sweeney the Stooge?
Anyone with half a brain and the ability to find their ass with two hands and a flashlight should have seen the turmoil that picking a NAME over SUBSTANCE would cause!

Sweeney and his band of merry fools just keep handing Chrispy Chreme issue after issue like servants offering up their lambs to slaughter.

What a complete DUMBASS move!! Did NOBODY see the "Hey, he hasn't been a registered voter here (i.e. NOT  A LEGAL RESIDENT) and, in fact, has steadilly been voting in CALIFORNIA for years" writing on the ReTHUGlican target board? Politics 101, Morons!!

This  is another FAILURE brought to you from the Norcross/Sweeney coven of crap.

I havae been hammering this choice since day one (though I hadn't even considered the residency act as a whole) and certain water-carriers of Sweeney McSleaze keep calling me wrong. Looks like you're more wrong than I.

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.
