Democratic Chair Comments on Christie-CWA Negotiations

by: Rosi Efthim

Wed Mar 23, 2011 at 11:42:51 AM EDT

The Governor is trying to end-run negotiations with the state's largest public employee union. Chris "I love collective bargaining" Christie wants to take off the table proposed changes in health care benefits for 38,000 New Jerseyans, precisely the sort of issue meant to be worked out in negotiation. For a hundred reasons, Christie gives the state plenty of reason to doubt his word about his love of collective bargaining. Add to that, the tag team of Christie and Senate President Steve Sweeney; the union man's alliance with the union-busting governor is a relationship that has produced a howl in two very large pro-union rallies outside the State House. From inside the State House, here is what NJ Democratic State Chair Asm John Wisniewski had to say today:

Despite relentless and factually incorrect attacks by the Governor, the CWA has come to the bargaining table and laid out a proposal through the collective bargaining process that will save taxpayers millions of dollars by gradually increasing the contributions made by workers for their healthcare," said Wisniewski. "While the Governor talks about his support for collective bargaining, his actions show he is in lock step with his union busting pal, Governor Scott Walker of Wisconsin, by failing to obey New Jersey law and negotiate in good faith with New Jersey's workers. Public workers are willing to do their part to help solve our state's budget crisis by bringing thoughtful, innovative and cost-saving proposals to the table for discussion. Unfortunately, the Governor seems more interested in arguing and scapegoating than negotiating. That's not bargaining, it's dictating and it certainly won't solve our problems.

CWA will not answer this question! (0.00 / 0)
With the fact that the SHBP is a multi-union plan I simply want to know that should the CWA leadership bargain a giveback( and that is what they already proposed)  does that mean that only CWA members will be paying more for health care?

If that is the case then the Principle of collective bargaining over health care must be sacraficed.

If all the unions who participate cannot pay then none should pay.

I would like to offer a suggestion to the CWA leadership. Maybe it is time for the 40,000 member CWA union to pull out of the SHBP if they do not want to deal with legisaltion of benefits. Negotiatie a monetary benefit package and contract out to a private company. Then you can "stick it" to both Chrisite and the Legislature.

Thanks Chairman Wisniewski (0.00 / 0)
Thanks to Assemblyman Wisniewski, who unlike some others knows that we have negotiated healthcare in this state since 1968.

Will others pay? (0.00 / 0)
I hope CWA has an agreement with all the other government worker unions to ensure that they also pay more into the multi-union SHBP.

Those unions cannot let CWA members be the only people paying more.

Contracts are packaged deals (0.00 / 0)
We don't want to bargain for all other unions.  contracts are packages.  If we negotiated more money in exchange for something, or job security in exchange for something - that works for our members.  You can't just look at one aspect of an economic package and say CWA pays more or less.  With corzine we bargained a combination of wage increases and job security in exchange for lesser healthcare concessions.  When the legislature imposed our 1.5% on other unions - they didn't get the increased wages and job security that we did.

Multi-union plan MUST be funded in a multi-union manner (0.00 / 0)
We all agree that the multi-union SHBP is in deep trouble. To ask your CWA members to "pay up"without any other union having to pay up is unfair.

Unless an agreement is made with the other unions also paying then you are asking too much of your members.

Collective bargaining is great,BUT NOT FOR MULTI-UNION BENEFIT PLANS.

Will the other unions agree to pay their fair share?
