Public Workers Locked Out of State House

by: Couch Potato Politics

Mon Mar 21, 2011 at 04:01:05 PM EDT

This is an account of a confusing and dramatic few moments in the State House yesterday. The aftermath was captured in an extraordinary audio clip of Sen. Loretta Weinberg - listen all the way through. - Rosi

In a moment much smaller yet reminiscent of Madison, Wisconsin circa February 28, 2011, Chris Christie ordered the state house closed to union members and their representatives. Ironically, this wasn't a mass protest but rather a scheduled set of appointments with State Senators and representatives.

Citing an unnamed, undated and unsigned policy, the Governor ordered citizens and union members turned away from entering the state house for a series of legitimately scheduled appointments to discuss the Governors recent attacks and acts against the members rights to bargain and negotiate healthcare benefits for their next contract.

Couch Potato Politics :: Public Workers Locked Out of State House
Ironic and telling that the Governor who claims to "Love collective bargaining" and entertains corporate lobbyists on a fairly regular basis can hardly stomach lobbyists who are not there to offer him platitudes and praise. Instead of welcoming them into their state house to partake in their right to discuss their future with their elected representatives.

Members that were allowed in statehouse are being stripped of pro-worker stickers, pins in direct violation of Senate's own policy.

When the Senate Democratic Leadership found out about this attempt to close the State House ,they acted and the Lobbyists were allowed in to do their " thing" .

Please give credit where credit is due. The Senate Democrats ,led by your " enemy" made this go away.

I also must give special credit to State Senator Weinberg . She is proving to be a real thorn in the side to the Governor .

Kudos to the perpetual critic who misses details (0.00 / 0)
Granted you're on the wrong side of bargaining rights battle but I'll give you credit for pointing out that after much delay and followed by police state "signage stripping" your boy, Sweeney didn't manage to stop (including small stickers and buttons), the people were granted access to THEIR house by his lordship, dicatator in chief.

You did, however miss the follow-up twitter posts at the end of the diary detailing the actions once entry into the building was allowed. Quick to critique. Maybe too quick when it seems you miss the details.

None of this changes the fact that they were banned at the outset and had to make some noise to get Sweeney to step in. And that even AFTER he stepped in the people were subjected to a revocation of their first amendment rights (Freedom of speech) when they were stripped of message paraphanalia, right down to small, self adhesive stickers worn on clothing.

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.

THAT is why we love Loretta. (4.00 / 3)
Who, by the way is up for re-election.  We need to really make sure she continues to speak up for us in Trenton, folks.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Sweeney Saved the Day( with Weinberg) (0.00 / 0)
Please give credit when credit is due.

His intervention made that issue go away.

Stop being a 100% " hater" .

You're valiant defense of Sweeney is tiring. (0.00 / 0)
With lips so firmly attached to Sweeney the Sell-Out's posterior, where do you find the time to eat?

The guy is trying to hand Christie yet ANOTHER victory on the backs of public labor.

And, listening to the
remarks of Loretta Weinberg (and ominous remarks of Sweeney at the end)
from within session then from Sweeney, sounds more like Weinberg did the heacvy lifiing and Sweeney is measuring the possibillity of making the unsigned, undated "rule" legitimate and legally enforceable:
"It is obviously an old policy, and, we will try to find out or UPDATE the policy. Our executive director sits on that committee so we bring it up at the next meeting."

Given that there are more "Lobby Days" scheduled, any activity on a non-binding memo (not enforceable) would only logically mean to make it an enforceable policy, legally.

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.

Sweeney to rescue (0.00 / 0)
Sweeney said it would be fixed and it was fixed.

Everyone got it in and I am sure the CWA lobby effort was very effective( what where they lobbying for anyway?).

Why not put the blame on the Governors office?

It seems your conspiracy theory just fell apart.

[ Parent ]
Sorry, but theory and dependable "insiders" say... (0.00 / 0)
seem to have Sweeney as the primary CULPRIT in the attempted ban, which would make sense as he is trying to back-stab the union and it's members with forcing legislation over negotiation and bargaining in concert with christie.

I know your love affair with Sweeney is deep and passionate but sometimes lovers can be a liars.

Christie, Not Sweeney to blame says CWA (0.00 / 0)
This from the CWA 1038 website.

PUBLIC WORKERS LOCKED OUT OF STATE HOUSE!

THE DISGRACEFUL SWEENEY ATTACKS CONTINUE ON THIS SITE DESPITE THE FACTS!!

The message was early and... (4.00 / 1)
... like so many developing stories, the details are subject to revision and updates.

BTW, you seem not to have noticed that the story on CWA 1038 is actually copied from THIS orginal post, not the other way around.

Not reading before posting again?

What makes you so certain Sweeney didn't lock out the union members? (0.00 / 0)
Sweeney has done absolutely nothing to earn anyone's trust.  He claims to be a Democrat and a "union guy" but he's trying to take away workers' collective bargaining rights, the very foundation that unions are built upon.  If he's willing to lie like that, then I wouldn't put anything past him.   The man is a straight up fraud.

FA07 quotes CWA! (4.00 / 1)
cites union website!

Praise the Lord! It's a miracle!

Every body did NOT get in.  My group got out of the rain after an hour and a  half... and a 3 hour drive from Passaic for some.

Justice delayed is justice denied.

[ Parent ]
Sounds like poor CWA planning (2.00 / 1)
According to "reliable" news reports in the Star Ledger, the CWA people could not tell the State police where they were going in the building.

What did CWA leadership tell the activists," just show up and walk around". Anyway if you are interested in THE FACTS  read the article.

CWA activists seem intent on blaming everything on Sweeney and could care less about the facts.

As an aside, that lockout would have never happened 8 years ago when CWA WAS a political force in the State. What happened to THAT CWA?

here is the link to what REALLY happened:
