CWA pickets Sen. Teresa Ruiz in Newark

by: Rosi Efthim

Wed Mar 16, 2011 at 02:26:08 PM EDT

UPDATE: I'll post video I just got - after the jump.

Last night, members of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), who are currently engaged in tough negotiations with the state, joined by members of NJEA, AFL-CIO, SEIU, IFPTE and other unions, launched the first in a series of efforts calling on legislators to stand up for the basic collective bargaining rights of public workers.

Working families in NJ are fighting to stop a proposal to unilaterally strip health care benefits out of the collective bargaining process. And the first legislator to feel the unions' unity was Senator Teresa Ruiz. Union members congregated outside her offices in Newark last night. Here are some pictures:

Burning Bridges (2.50 / 2)
I am sure that was really effective!

Well that is one more Democrat you can never approach again.

Great strategy.... lol

Do you have any thoughts, opinions or reflections that are not exact mirrors of what Steve Sweeney's thoughts, opinions or reflections are?

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

These are my thoughts! (0.00 / 0)
CWA is in a corner and they are burning bridges.

This picket idea is bullshit. They know it .

Will they be happier when the Legislature is Republican?

This is ineffective nonsense that is all eyewash and diversions.

CWA better read up on how Wisconsin was lost and they better be careful what the ywish for.

Ruiz is a good ,moderate legislator.

Tomorrow they are going after Scutari.

Why do they not picket Kean,or DeCroce ,or maybe Christie.

THIS IS A STUPID, STUPID MOVE!

Picketing Chris Christie (0.00 / 0)

I think that's a great idea.  But I have to think that if CWA decided to do that, you'd write a diary criticizing them for picketing someone who isn't going to change their mind.

Wrong again (0.00 / 0)
Picketing at Christie town halls would take some guts.

It would also take some organization.

Picketing Democratic Legislators because they did not sign some stupid McCarthy like loyalty pledge is one of the dumbest ideas CWA has come up with in years.

This is a union leadership group that is simply out of touch with reality. It is also a leadership that is standing at the top of a very apathetic union membership.

I will bet you that 3/4 of the people who were standing outside of Senator Ruiz's office did not even know who she was or why they were there.

In addition, the " crowd" was very very small.

If CWA has any b**lls they will picket the " big guy".

But do not hold your breath.

Why do you hold your fellow union members in such low esteem? (0.00 / 0)

It's pretty mean (and I think completely inaccurate) to write:

"I will bet you that 3/4 of the people who were standing outside of Senator Ruiz's office did not even know who she was or why they were there. "

The point of the question wasn't to get you to state yet again something that sounds like what Sweeney would say.

The point of it was to underscore that that's all we ever hear from you.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

This is Bridge Burning (0.00 / 0)
You hear from me on this topic because this is the topic we are discussing.

As I said before, this idea of picketing moderate Democratic Legislators IS THE DUMBEST IDEA FROM CWA IN YEARS!

It serves no positive purpose. It alienates those who you might need down the line in an election year.

Sorry, but I am flabergasted that the political " minds" at CWA thought this could be a positive.

Go picket Chrisite at his town halls meetings!

Do you even GET Progressive Activism? (0.00 / 0)
Based on MOST of your posts, you may be missing the point on being a LIBERAL, a PROGRESSIVE, a BLUE DEMOCRAT.

This isn't "Bridge Burning". It's "Calling to Account" those who won't stand with you on the values of your party. When an elected Democrat won't publically acknowledge and vow to defend the people that got them elected and whose philosophy they are supposed to share in, they need to know that they either get on the bus or they will get run-over by the bus next election cycle.

I, for one, have NO PROBLEM alienating another fake Democrat, like SWEENEY or anyone else who won't do the right thing, with public protests and finger pointing.

You really have NOTHING useful to contribute to the debate when all you do is repeat the same garbage. Suprised only that YOU dind't mention Saint Sweeney's in this thread FIRST.

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.

Picket Republicans (0.00 / 0)
They, generally, don't give resources and support to Republicans.  I don't think that it's too much in return to expect people you support to support you when the chips are down.

[ Parent ]
Democreates (0.00 / 0)
We need to stop funding the democrates campaign let them fend for themseleves, and do away with paying contractors prevailing Wages, the Union is making a fool out of us members

[ Parent ]
Then why not replace her... (0.00 / 0)
...with a Democrat that we can approach?
This is exactly the kind of district where a primary challenge makes sense.  Not much risk of losing the seat -- last time around Ruiz drew 57% of the vote in a field of six candidates.  The Republican came in fourth with 2% of the vote.

Some bridges need burning (0.00 / 0)
Those who stand for nothing will fall for anything.

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.
