So Is The "Magic" Beginning to Wear Off?

by: Senator Loretta Weinberg

Mon Mar 14, 2011 at 09:00:00 AM EDT

Nothing like a dose of the truth to shine the light on the fact that the Emperor really wears no clothes.

1.  New Jersey Loses Jobs: 13,000 of them according to the state DOL. So much for all those tax cuts to make NJ welcoming to business. So much for the Governor's veto of the Legislature's job creation bills.

2.  Property Taxes Increase: A 2010 increase averaging about 4.1% vs. an average increase of about 3.5% in the years 2007 thru 2009. So let's see - the "tough budget" Governor Christie has increased property taxes more than that "wimpy budget" Governor Corzine.  mmmmm?

3.  The Straight Talking Governor: apparently doesn't always talk so "straight and honest" - read the New York Times article unmasking Governor Blunt Speaking who seems to embellish  the truth just a little.

4. Poll Numbers Going Down (and Down): "Governor Bragging I Know I can Win" is now running second in the GOP primary race behind Mitt Romney.  And among those who know him best right here in New Jersey, he's also losing points according to the latest Eagleton Poll.

5.  Governor Nominees Not Faring So Well:
Lots of stories (see Sunday's Star Ledger) and rumors around about what really happened during that NJ Bar Association interview of judicial nominee Michael Patrick Carroll.  Assemblyman Carroll's nomination was withdrawn almost as quickly as it was mentioned. And Acting Education Commissioner Chris Cerf is not getting a judiciary interview because Senator Rice is blocking him.  According to the Senator, Mr. Cerf was "less than honest" when he denied having known Mayor Cory Booker.  Cerf will also have some explaining to do about his business association with the company that privately audited the Newark schools.  You know - the Company that is registered to Cerf's home address.

6.  Governor Transparency:  Who can forget Reform Jersey Now followed by the Center for a Better New Jersey?

And so it goes.  The magic dust over the Emperor's castle is slowly being scattered to the winds of reality.

Terrible news from Japan has us all watching in horror. I was forwarded an email from a resident of Hawaii who wrote: "The miracle and reach of email is unbelievable. I emailed my only relative in Japan asking about their well being. A quick response assuring me they were safe but at the end of the message I was floored by the comment, "President Obama's comments give us courage." So typically Japanese. Only wish everyone in our country would have such respect for our President." Just thought that was an email worth sharing.

This afternoon I will be chairing Senate Health Committee where we will be discussing a bill clarifying and tightening the vaccine exemptions. A difficult subject. I am old enough to remember what life was like before many vaccines such as during polio scares in our country. No swimming, no movies, no ball games and no place where crowds gathered if there was an outbreak. The first vaccines were not without problems, but today, thankfully, this is no longer a disease affecting our children.  I know we will continue a dialogue, and this is probably the only issue where Carol H. and I have a difference of opinion.

Have been following the competition between our Governor and Pat Quinn, Governor of Illinois. "Governor New Jersey Is Leading The World" is appearing in Illinois ads and made a trip to Chicago to try to attract business to New Jersey. According to Christie, Governor Quinn is a disaster. So far New Jersey hasn't had any takers and now some group in Illinois is running ads in NJ business publications. Hope neither side is spending taxpayer money on this silliness. Another of those senseless, fights started by you know who.

Kudos to Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska
, the first Republican Senator to come out against the federal defunding of Planned Parenthood.  Wish we had a few ready to stand up right here in New Jersey.

Let us not forget (4.00 / 1)
Mr. Christie's myriad of personal and familial questions of honesty, transparency and integrity.

His brother making massive contributons to GOP groups directly responsible for getting  Christie the the job as US Attorney in NJ (With zero criminal trial/law experience).

Or his brother avoiding prosecution for ripping off investors while people above an below him took the hit, all while Christie was a Prosecutor in the Fed. Some even say he "Made some calls".

That same brother re-titling himself as an "Alternative Energy Consultant" after Christie's recent moves on alt. energy. Some inside influence at play?

Going back, a myriad of automobile incidents including the hospitilization of a motorcyclist in what was clearly a neglegent of not reckless driving incident where he used his position as US Attorney to avoid being cited. Seems to be a pattern with him and driving as since 1985, Christie, 46, has racked up 25 violation points (not all at one time), has been in six accidents and was cited 13 times for moving violations, including five without points. Seems he isn't much for obeying the law.

And lets not forget that every decision he has made under the title of "Shared sacrifice" had no impact on him and, infact, benefitted him personally.

There was never any "Magic" associated with this guy other than the hypnosis  that the people of New Jersey fell under when "His Beligerence" was running for office... and even then he was lying at every opportunity. Ask the cops and firefighters about their benefits and pensions Christie swore to keep his hands off of.

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.

"the magic" (3.00 / 1)
There was a video clip used on last week's "Reporters Roundtable" where Christie was addressing a friendly audience and said something along the lines of "give me a Republican legislature this fall and you ain't seen nothing yet."
Anyone got a link to the clip or a transcript?  I do hope the Democratic candidates intend to use it this fall. Right there Christie succinctly summarized the most compelling reason to reelect the Democratic majorities.

Particularly (3.00 / 1)
in light of last week's polling suggesting NJ voters want a Democratic-controlled legislature if they've got a GOP Guv.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

So now that property taxes (3.00 / 1)
have increased 4% will the legislature get to work and pass the tool kit Christie has said his reforms are no good with the passage of the tool kit Without a tool kit or hard cap taxes will go up another 5% next year plain and simple .....as for jobs they will never come back to a state that taxes it's residents more than any other state We,ve been digging this hole for 15 years I doubt we will get out in the next 15 years at this rate

Wrong claims don't fix problems (4.00 / 1)
New Jersey does not tax it's residents higher than any other state. It is that unresearched regurgitation of Christie's campaign lies that keeps hurting, not helping the middle class and poor in the state.

Here are some facts to consider:
Texas pays 1.74% of home value to property taxes, higher than New Jersey. And they are the "Magical Right to Work" type of state Christie envisions. They have one of the lowest testing public school systems and they are a disaster on environmental pollution to boot.

In the overall scheme of things, Califiornia and Rhode Island are worse than NJ on Taxes and if it weren't for the over-inflated property values imposed on homes in NJ during the housing bubble boom, Jersey would likely be down around number 15 or 20 on dollars paid in taxes.

Christie is hiding the truth, as usual, to empower himself to eventually hand over management and ownership of the state to the same people who started up and run his beloved "Reform New Jersey" capmaign contributors. Not that we know who they are since "Mr. Transparency" allows them to remain unseeably transparent.

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.

Damn that Christie (0.00 / 0)
for making us pay high property taxes on inflated home values no less !

[ Parent ]
Christie... (0.00 / 0)
only cited the report put forth by the Tax Foundation. (who has been ranking NJ#1 since before he was in office)

If there is some connection between the Tax Foundation and Christie, no one has pointed it out.

I have seem posts critical of their findings, but no one has ever provided any reason why they would skew the data in favor (or not in favor, depends on how you look at it) of NJ.

Lisa Murkowski (3.00 / 1)
I guess when you're unbought and unbossed, you can have your own power accordingly... of course Lisa Murkowski knows that by now what Loretta Weinberg's known for years.

And for those singing the praises of... (4.00 / 1)
The "tool Kit".....please tell me what the legislature has not passed from the so-called tool kit and how these bills will actually reduce property taxes!

Oh, I would say the magic is wearing off (0.00 / 0)
Came across this article.  It does not bode well for our Lt. Governor, and former sheriff of Monmouth County, Kim Guadagno.  It also does not bode well for current sheriff Shaun Golden:
