NJ Stand Up Rally in the Rain

by: Rosi Efthim

Fri Feb 25, 2011 at 12:49:17 PM EST

I've been called a Klansman twice. I've walked past the part of West State Street that the Tea Party has staked for itself and been given the finger by a lady whose friends probably think she has better manners than that.

rally2Right now, still raining, I'm under a tiny overhang in front of a beautiful building, laptop poised on lap. The state house is a sea of red, and umbrellas being bent backwards in the wind.

rally3A few minutes ago, Sharonda Allen (that's her on the right, with teacher and Assembly candidate in NJ-23 Marie Corfield) had a little moment with one of the counter-protesters. He was carrying a picture of Barack Obama with a Hitler moustache. She asked him to remove the moustache from the president's picture. He replied, "That's Charlie Chaplin! His moustache!" And she told him she's a history teacher (in East Orange) and that moustache is meant to convey Adolf Hitler, and further that he knows it. We walked away. Peaceful rally, no matter what they do. Rally 1

I just ran into Blue Jersey's Bill Orr, who took note of some of the counter-protesters signs - we'll try to file that as soon as we can. He tells me Steve Lonegan of Americans for Prosperity -  the Koch Brothers-funded group that sits to Gov. Christie's right - just thanked his crowd, a handful of people, for coming. And so it goes.

Just now, as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Wisconsin AFL-CIO walked up to the podium, the Tea Party folks tried to drown her out with America the Beautiful.

Thank you, Rosi... (0.00 / 0)
not only for giving an update but for being there along with so many other people. My heart is with all of you even as I'm stuck here at work. I feel inadequate being here when I should be standing in the rain. :-( Thank you on behalf of all hard-working and much-maligned public sector workers.

Thanks to all of the BlueJerseyer's (0.00 / 0)
who were able to get to Trenton.

I don't know about all of you but I find the current political climate a little frightening. With the 'right" running roughshod over beliefs I have held firmly for over 40 years.  The whole world is topsy-turvy.  The older I get the less I like change.  This is too much.

The only bright spot is the resurgence of unionism and the support it is getting for unlikely places. And the solidarity of brothers and sisters who are not currently threatened

Ironic that we are now using the word that resulted in sweeping changes in Poland, 20 years ago.  SOLIDARITY

I was wearing the Blue Jersey tee, so a lot of people stopped me to say hello, some of them introducing themselves by their anonymous usernames at Blue Jersey, and two to complain (very good-naturedly) that they got fooled by Joey Novick's satire diary that Christie was going to rally with Gov. Scott Walker, Rep. Chris "Redefine Rape" Smith and Sen. Rand Paul at a "Turn Back the Clock" rally.

Great seeing everyone & being there.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Oh what a feeling! (0.00 / 0)
Having been there as well, I have to add that the feeling of unity and togetherness spread by the union supportors was inspiring!

We were one people with hope in our hearts and fire in our voices!

If we don't stand together, we fall alone
That didn't last long.

Just back from Trenton Rally (0.00 / 0)
We had a great turnout in the rain. then like a message from above the skies cleared and the sun came out while Richard Trumka spoke. We had firefighters, telephone workers, building trades, state workers teachers, cops, all good hard working people . This was a Cross section of the people that make it happen every day. The tea baggers had a small presence, maybe 10 people, and they had their Obama Hitler signs.

It was great (0.00 / 0)
From where I stood, I could not see or hear any tea partiers. The rally was inspiring, emotional, and fun (despite the occasional downpour). But it doesn't stop here. We need to keep the pressure on the legislature to prevent us from becoming another anti-labor state.

Tea party (0.00 / 0)
They had an umbrella at W, State and Chancery Ln. They had pictures of the President with the Hitler mustache. There was some people in the crowd that used to be sympathetic to the TP but claimed they were duped.

Am in California (0.00 / 0)
Where it's also raining. Little Jonah is 6 years old today. Big birthday weekend culminating at the local bowling alley on Sunday.  Thanks for making us all feel part of what went on today. Rosi (and your 'boy toy') are great reporters!

Oh, Loretta, you don't know ... (0.00 / 0)
I had all the best boy-toys there a girl could ask for in Trenton today.

Shout--outttt!!!

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Went to the rally in WA (0.00 / 0)
The organizers shoud have held it in Seattle but they made people schlep tp Olympia.  So there were only about 1000 people.  The tea party planned a rally but I don't think there were even 50 of them, I guess they are wusses that didn't want to walk around in the cold and the snow in Olympia.
