Ray Lesniak: Cable company tool

The legislation preserves regulations for 911 calls and other public safety services. But it removes laws that require companies to provide a credit when customers experience a cable outage for more than four hours, for example.  It would also lift laws that:

ensure cable companies do not discriminate or refuse service;

require companies to correct billing errors;

protect consumers from slamming, the practice of switching a consumer's telephone company for local or long distance service without permission..

If the legislation passed, cable companies would no longer be mandated to carry public education and government channels.

This giveaway to the cable companies is almost beyond belief.  But don't worry, Republicrat Lesniak says this needs to be done because the regulations "go back decades."  Remember, that's the same thing they said in Washington when they repealed the Glass-Steagal bill in 1999.  We know how that turned out.

But Republicrat Lesniak sides with the cable companies over consumers.  It may not be good for cable customers in the state, but it will be good for Ray Lesniak's campaign coffers.
