Kasparian resigning as BCDO Chair

by: Rosi Efthim

Fri Jan 28, 2011 at 03:03:45 PM EST

Mike Kasparian, who took the reins of the Bergen County Democratic Organization after notorious county boss Joe Ferriero's leadership collapsed under the weight of its own corruption, is out. Kasparian said today he'll step down from his post in March.

The struggle over BCDO's direction apparently at a new plateau, and Kasparian now on a get-out timetable, Weinberg was all compliments today, but signaled what she's after. Special to Blue Jersey:

I am looking forward to new, fresh, inclusive, substantive and progressive leadership who will work to rebuild our Bergen Democratic Organization from the grass roots up. I would like to thank Michael Kasparian for his service.

Rosi Efthim :: Kasparian resigning as BCDO Chair
Kasparian struggled in his leadership role, with a disastrous win-loss record; under his leadership the BCDO lost control of the Freeholder board, and saw Leo McGuire, sheriff for the better part of a decade, lose to Republican Michael Saudino and County Executive Dennis McNerney lose to Republican Kathe Donovan.

Kasparian also often appeared unhinged from both progressive rank and file Bergen Democrats, and also the county's standard-bearer of party transparency, Senator Loretta Weinberg. In fact, late last month, when Kasparian fired the party's legal counsel, Weinberg indicated she didn't hear from Kasparian often enough to know what he was thinking. And just days ago on Jan. 12, Weinberg again turned up the heat on Kasparian, making public an email she sent him, demanding an executive committee meeting, after many such sessions were canceled by Kasparian. And there's little support for Kasparian from Sen. Paul Sarlo.

I knew he was in trouble (4.00 / 1)
when he began asking folks outside the inner sanctum for advice on what to do.

The poor guy was just overwhelmed.  When, after Joe Ferriero was let off the hook due to the Supreme Court decision about $$$$ = Free Speech, the BCDO regulars popped champagne corks.  They still didn't get it - that Bergen County had moved on and now understands what Pay to Play actually means.

Power only comes from winning elections, and when you pick the same old characters that everyone recognizes just like a Thomas Nast cartoon (sorry Jim Carroll - I'm lookin' in your general direction) you can't win the public trust.

When day after day revelations about the Bergen County Improvement Authority and other patronage mills used by the BCDO show that we need an intervention, and even the public is wise to it now, it's pretty obvious things need to change.

I'm not talking Egypt-size unrest but we need to stop re-arranging the deck chairs.  I think Kasparian may have had the best of intentions when he took the helm - but the crew he was dealing with were nothing better than a greedy bunch of pirates with their own ideas of how to run the ship.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Carroll was an early Dean supporter (0.00 / 0)
Obviously, this doesn't mean that he isn't as corrupt as you say he is, Carol, but unless Loretta Weinberg has someone who she can get elected as County Chair, my guess is that anybody else who runs for the job is going to be linked to the old guard to one degree or another.

So if the choice is between Corrupt Pol A, Corrupt Pol B, and Corrupt Pol C, I would choose the Corrupt Pol, who had enough integrity, somewhere embedded deep within all of the layers of corruption that have more or less consumed him, to buck the conventional wisdom and support Howard Dean when he ran for President.

I know that this is a terrible way to pick a leader, but you live in a terrible county in a terrible state in a terrible country in a terrible world and these are the kinds of choices that we have at our disposal.

If you want a better choice, be the change that you want to see and run for County Chair.  Or get Camille Abate or Byron Arnao or Rocco Mazza to run.  In lieu of a real progressive stepping up, Jim Carroll is probably the best that the BCDO can hope for.

Please tell me (0.00 / 0)
you are joshing.  You should NEVER choose a corrupt pol even if he has a nice demeanor.

As this pertains to Jim Carroll.  I don't know Jim Carroll personally. I don't know if he is corrupt or not.

What he IS is the poster boy for the reign of Joe Ferriero.  Regardless of whether or not he supported Dean, the Bergen County voters associate him as the most visible FACE of the Bergen County Freeholder Board under the Pay to Play regime of Joe Ferriero.  A group they resoundingly rejected.

Many of the candidates chosen by Joe are nice people, maybe even pushovers.  The kind of folks who don't ask questions - they just go to ribbon cuttings.  That's swell, but it isn't the kind of belt-tightening leadership we need right now or the kind of elected official who will investigate waste, fraud, and abuse which was rampant under Jim Carroll's watch on the Freeholder Board.

The fact that he is throwing his hat into the ring and that BCDO folks are taking it seriously means that either he knows too much to get thrown under the bus, or they really don't get why they just lost the last few elections.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Obviously, if the choice is between Carroll and you or Rocco Mazza or another good government progressive, I choose the good government progressive.

But if the choice is between Carroll and Paul Sarlo and/or another/other former Ferriero crony/cronies, then I would go with Carroll, because of this one redeeming quality.

I know that this is a terrible way to pick a leader, but you live in a terrible county in a terrible state in a terrible country in a terrible world and these are the kinds of choices that we have at our disposal.
