Gaudagno reportedly spending time with ailing father

by: Rosi Efthim

Wed Dec 29, 2010 at 03:30:09 PM EST

LG Kim Guadagno is reportedly in Mexico to spend time with her father, who has Stage iV cancer.

If this is true, then 3 immediate things should be said:

1 - We wish the LG's father comfort and health, relaxation and peace.

2 - The Christie front office should have released that information immediately. Failing to do so, and instead running a PR campaign focused on damage control for the Christie take-charge image, reflects far more poorly on the Christie administration than it does anyone who criticized either elected official this week.

3 - And most critically, this information brings into even sharper focus the irresponsibility of Gov. Christie himself. He should have been here, knowing his LG was on compassionate duty with her family, and not simply a vacation, as he is taking.

Christie flew out of NJ on Sunday. That's when the snow started, that's when snow projections became clear. If he knew the nature of Guadagno's trip - and I cannot imagine he didn't - he was on notice that she was going to be unavailable to serve in his absence and might be unavailable to be called back.

That made his actions that much more irresponsible, arrogant and not-ready-for-prime-time.

LeadershipFAIL.

But think of his kids! (3.00 / 1)
They would have been so disappointed! It would have been a traumatic memory for decades - that Dad cared more about his dumb job than having fun on a family vacation! /snark

What did Christie do down in Orlando besides got to Disneyworld? That can take three days to see, of course, and even more if you go to on of the water parks.

that's cruel (4.00 / 2)
It must be hard for her to care for her father now that Christie has dumped all this heat in her lap.  it really stinks.

I'm gonna re-tweet this link on FaceBook and Twitter right away.  I hope everyone else will too.

Agree, Jay (4.00 / 2)
She deserves the support. Anyone - in any job, including a public one - deserves support and friendship when they're on, essentially, compassionate leave with someone they love.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

...to see how Christie spins this when he gets back.

Christie spins this? (0.00 / 0)
Christie just shouts, it will be Drewniak who does all the spinning. :D

Politically stupid (0.00 / 0)
From a purely political standpoint what Christie did (or more importantly, what he did not do) was incredibly stupid, and will likely hurt his image and damage him politically, which is good news as far as I'm concerned.  This will also benefit Sweeney at Christie's expense, and deservedly so.

On a purely personal level, as a parent myself with small kids, I can't really begrudge the guv taking time off with his kids for the holidays, even with the snowstorm, so lomg as he made sure that Sweeney was willing to cober for him and the knowledge that Sweeney was better able and more competent to handle any emergency than the LG would have been.  In fact, I'd submit that Sweeney was better qualified than Christie to handle the situation, and wqould have done a better job.  It's not as if Christie took off and let SpongeBob handle things.

To put it in perspective, I don't think what Christie did was any worse than his predecessor not wearing a seatbelt and ordering his driver to exceed the speed limit in a non-emergency situation, and then proceed to get in a serious accident that luckily did not involve other drivers.

Hopefully they can get this done before Christie gets back.

Absolutely Awful (4.00 / 1)
First, I hope that the LG's father is surrounded by his family and that there is peace at this difficult time.  My thoughts are truly with Guadagno.

Second, and more to the bitter point, this shows the world the ugly side of Christie.  That he would let us all assume that Guadagno was on vacation too is appalling.  Really, there aren't words to describe his actions here.

I hope the press gets hold of this and doesn't let go.

had an emergency - he ran out of kitty litter & couldn't be bothered to walk to the beach for a bucket of sand,  & was outraged that his personal stretch of Jersey''s 2,800 miles of state roads hadn't been cleared just for him.

Where's Drewniak ? (0.00 / 0)
The Governors Spokesmodel seems to be ready for a sarcastic comment whenever a handicapped, homeless, or working person is the subject at hand so why didn't he jump in the spotlight to highlight why the Lt Governor is away.

I don't think there is a single person in the state who would have a problem with her decision to leave the state. Of course given how just about everyone including the GOP has tossed the Lt Gov under the bus in the last few days, this is going to make Chris Christie look even more self serving than he already is.

I feel for Guadagno (0.00 / 0)
however, I've had several family members die from cancer. None of them went to Mexico to do it. And all of them lived MUCH closer to Mexico than New Jersey.

When my great grandfather had one entire lung and half of the other removed because of lung cancer, he laid down in the bed of his pickup and asked a friend to drive him to his kids' houses because he wanted to tell them good-bye and didn't want to force them to travel to do it.

I'm sure it's true that she's spending time with her father and that her father has cancer. I'm sorry to hear it. But couldn't he have come to New Jersey for the holidays?

However, I think it is wrong to blame Guadagno for Christie's failure of leadership.
