Addressing Gender Inequality in the State House

by: Jay Lassiter

Wed Dec 01, 2010 at 11:49:31 AM EST

Assemblywoman Connie Wagner (via PolitickerNJ):
There are currently 13 districts without a woman in the New Jersey state legislature," she said in an email. "That means 2.83 million people in New Jersey are being solely represented by men. Women make up more than 50 percent of the population, but only 28.3 percent of New Jersey legislature is female."
Each time a seat opens up is an opportunity to send a very loud message to to the party's base that the Democratic Party values fairness and diversity. the good, the bad, the ugly below the fold

"I hope that the situation presented to us by Assemblyman Scalera stepping down doesn't create a war amongst our counties," she said. "I believe that Fred has served admirably and will be missed for his expertise on Homeland Security issues. That being said, I do believe that we can go in a different direction and appoint someone who will take on the role as assemblywoman and lead District 36 just as well as Assemblyman Scalera did. Past precendent aside, I believe that person should be from Bergen County which represents a great majority of the district and would allow for Democrats to more easily keep the seat in the future. I hope that the Bergen members of the 36th district county committee will come together and pick a suitable female alternative to replace Assemblyman Scalera."

I'm just glad (0.00 / 0)
we're now in a time when Bergen Democrats are free to speak their mind about something like this. It used to be that almost no one would dare speak until informed what then-Chairman Ferriero wanted.

Diversity of opinions is also good.

And once again... (0.00 / 0)
...liberals show us that they don't believe in looking for the best person or judging based on the content of one's character. Instead, it's all about identity politics.

And once again, a conservative (4.00 / 1)
has something against a woman in public office.  How special.

As if by choosing a woman she would, by definition (she is a woman after all) be inferior to your male choice.  (Except Sarah Palin of course cause she's hot.)

It's about representation, silly. There are plenty of qualified women for the job.  It's just hard for a lot of women to stomach politics due to the rantings of neanderthal lunkheads like you.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

What's funny (4.00 / 2)
is that I already support drafting Rocco Mazza for that spot. So there.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

It's OK, Carol (0.00 / 0)
4 out of the 6 legislators in LD37 and LD38 are women so we should be able to give Rocco a pass or get Loretta Weinberg to issue a proclamation, declaring him an honorary woman.

There is no doubt in my mind that he would be as good if not better on women's issues than any actual woman who might contend for a legislative seat in LD36.

glad to see... (0.00 / 0)
....the chorus calling for "more straight white guys" is still alive and well.  y'all have about one more generation before you're going to be able to fulfill your carefully cultivated persecution complex.

And when that day comes -- the day YOU'RE not the majority -- it's not gonna be pretty unless you come to grips with demographic realities.

Buena Suerta, homeboy.  you're gonna need it.
