Jay Lassiter: Named One of the Top 100 Political Power Players of 2010

by: Rosi Efthim

Mon Nov 15, 2010 at 11:17:22 PM EST

Congratulations to Blue Jersey's Jay Lassiter, who hit #96 on the mostly-annual Power List put out by politickernj. Here's what politicker had to say about Jay:

96
Jay Lassiter
Progressive Activist

The Blue Jersey blogger is an iconoclast, tech savvy media artiste, street warrior for marriage equality, and un-intimidated presence in the halls of Trenton power as he aggressively pursues liberal causes. He squeaked out the readers' choice poll but would have made this year's list either way.

We're so damned proud. Provocateur, storyteller and fashion plate, Jay was the first blogger to cover the NJ State House, one of the first bloggers anywhere to become a routine presence in covering any state legislature, as the New York Times noted when they profiled Jay. In an earlier iteration, when the world was young, Blue Jersey founder Juan Melli was named Politician of the Year (2006) and #17 Most Powerful (2007).

... Nobody else but Jay Lassiter would nail NOM like this.
... Or rock out elections on two continents.
... Or go with Loretta Weinberg and get it on video when she did this.
... And who the hell else would dare to do this.

The rest of politicker's Power List, most of the numbers higher than Jay's, aren't like him. Let's face it. Most of those folks are on the list because they spend their waking hours jockeying for position, or positioning those jockeying for position. Or they bring the money, honey. Jay's blue plate special is bringing the hearts and minds. He's Blue Jersey Fresh and Juicy. Congratulations #96.

Congratulations, Jay! (4.00 / 1)
I don't see James Beach's name anywhere on this list.  That tells me that you could take him with one video camera tied behind your back.

honestly Bertin, me ego just loves this line of reason.... but to be clear:  i want to be a politician like an exterminator wants to be a cockroach.

it's simply not the life i want for myself.

If not you, who? If not now, when? (0.00 / 0)
Is there someone else in your district who could challenge Beach as effectively as you could?  If so, get her/him to do it.  If not, how else do you propose getting him out of office and getting someone into that seat who is as progressive as John Adler used to be when he was sitting in it?

I know that I have no business telling you or anybody else here what you should do with your life, but I can't help being frustrated by the opportunity and talent that you waste by not taking him on.

Even if I am fortunate enough to have my town of Dunellen redistricted into Kip Bateman's district and even if if I was blessed with your skills, I still wouldn't have a chance in hell of beating him, because of the nature of the district.

You live in a district that could and should be represented by someone far more liberal than Beach, but isn't solely because of the control that the Norcross machine has over who runs and who doesn't run for office in South Jersey.  Beach was their guy, so he got the seat when Adler left for DC.

2011 is one of those rare years (2007 was the last one) when insurgents have a fighting chance against the political machines, because the voter universe is so small that a charismatic candidate like yourself with compelling ideas could actually defeat someone like Beach.

Aside from overstepping my bounds, tell me where I am wrong.

Congrats Jay, glad you decided not to take that break after all.

Congrats Jay! (4.00 / 1)
Well deserved. And I don't think any of the first 95 have close to as much fun doing what they do.

Damn good point. (4.00 / 1)
Some of them might not sleep so soundly at night, either.

Actually there are a few that shouldn't, that probably do. Scary thought.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

I don't think that any of them... (0.00 / 0)
...have any problem sleeping soundly at night, which is a scary thought indeed.

My partner Greg called this list a "who's who of who cares" because he didn't recognize and of the names besides Oprah.

He was half kidding.

Jay - certainly Greg can see... (0.00 / 0)
...you're the best looking on the list, yes?  By far and away.

Steven - I am sure... (4.00 / 1)
...that your significant other would disagree.

No offense, but I think that Bari Mattes blows both of you away.
