Menendez Launches First Radio Ad

by: Juan Melli

Tue Jun 13, 2006 at 12:11:31 PM EDT

The Menendez campaign just released their first radio ad of the campaign which features audio from the Senator's primary night acceptance speech. This is what the campaign calls a "positive" ad. Uh huh. I guess by NJ politics standards it is. Transcript of the ad is below. Click to play:

Juan Melli :: Menendez Launches First Radio Ad
MENENDEZ: “I am convinced that our nation is headed down a perilous course at this moment in history. That is why I am convinced that one Senator, committed to an ideal and a cause, can create change, and that’s exactly what I am going to Washington to do. To create change.”

NARRATOR: “That’s Senator Bob Menendez …”

MENENDEZ: “This administration and its allies in Washington have taken the wrong position time after time. They were wrong on Iraq, wrong on trying to sell our ports to a foreign country, wrong on siding with Big Oil over consumers. Yet my opponent supports George Bush’s war in Iraq, and longs to be part of the status quo in Washington. I couldn’t disagree more.”

NARRATOR: “Paid for by Menendez for Senate.”

MENENDEZ: “I’m Senator Bob Menendez and I approved this message.”

I agree it starts down a slippery slope of denying 1st amendment rights.  Pallone has supported it too.

Re: (0.00 / 0)
A lot of people are upset about it.

To his defense, the Senator recently said (if memory serves me) that he has opposed it personally and because he thought it represented his district.  However, he would be willing to change it if he were convinced that the majority of NJ'ans stated that is the position they favor.

Corzine being replaced by Menendez brings the number of supporters for the amendment from 65 to 66 - one less than the critical 2/3rds required to pass in the Senate.

What these 66 Senators are supporting is offensive to the Constitution and to the flag itself. If a piece of legislation could implode in on itself by how inherently contradictory it is to it's supposed purpose, this would be it.

Menendez hasn't changed his mind about the issue (he's voted for it several times in the House). Though he says that now that he represents the entire state and not just the 13th district he will re-evaluate his position, that's really just a way for him to not have to give a firm answer until the vote. While representing the 13th district, he couldn't have had a more progressive constituency in the state. If he didn't listen to them then, a less overall progressive constituency won't change his mind.

I sent one of those emails to my Rep and Sens on Congress.org (0.00 / 0)
Saying I oppose the flag anti-desecration amendment on first amendment grounds.

From what I hear, I won't be getting a letter from Menendez.
