NJ Congressmen offer opposing views on Speaker Pelosi's Fate

by: Jay Lassiter

Fri Nov 05, 2010 at 04:02:47 PM EDT

At the exact instant I sat reading about Congressman Albio Sires calling for Nancy Pelosi's ouster as Dem leader in the next Congress, my Blackberry lit up with a press release from Congressman Rob Andrews who's still got Speaker Pelosi's back. Andrews:
"I am strongly supporting Nancy Pelosi for Democratic Leader. As Speaker, she has proven to be a strong leader in tumultuous times. She is a consensus builder who listens to and respects all sides. While she has the skills necessary to find common ground for the American people, I am confident that under her leadership we will never abandon our principles. We will build on our record of landmark healthcare reform, a reduction in taxes for 95 percent of the American people and a strong financial reform bill.

In the 112th Congress, we need strong leadership to continue these efforts to improve our country and revitalize our economy. I believe Speaker Pelosi is the right person to continue to lead our party and, therefore, support her run for Minority Leader."

I am torn about Pelosi and in the end I'm not change-averse on this one. It's an open thread, BlueJersey. What's your take?

first of all, wow (0.00 / 0)
Rob Andrews as liberal loyalist! Before I clicked through, I assumed it was the other way around.

I don't have a strong opinion either way. Anyone put in charge will be demonized. Having a moderate "red state" leader didn't work for the Senate (Reid, Daschle.)

I will say Pelosi did a great job.  So I rather like Andrews' statement. But after an election like this it's reasonable to change leadership.

Post-2008 election Andrews (4.00 / 1)
After his ill-fated attempt to take down Lautneberg in the 2008 Senate primary, Rob Andrews when to DC and took on a series of progressive causes including healthcare and a trans-inclusive Employment Non-discrimination act.  I think it reflects his values and I am glad he's trended left in the past 3 or 4 years.

Pelosi (4.00 / 1)
Nancy Pelosi was the only sign of life in the Democratic leadership in the 111th Congress.  I would like nothing better than to see her tear apart John Boehner and show the Tea Partiers what a woman can do.  See my previous post at http://goo.gl/lopG

I stand proudly with Nancy n/t (0.00 / 0)

Albio Sires (0.00 / 0)
Sires is not a very bright guy, but an interesting debate nonetheless.

Pelosi v. Hoyer? (0.00 / 0)
Are you kidding?  Nancy Pelosi is 10x Democrat, 10x fighter, 10x effective than her only real challenger, Sterny Hoyer.  Hoyer is basically the leader the BlueDogs/"New" Dems would love to inflict on progressives.  BlueJersey, you gotta back Pelosi on this one!

Well (0.00 / 0)
Steny Hoyer has a lifetime Progressive Punch score of 86.34. Pelosi's score is 94.1. So let's not pretend that there is an ocean of difference. There's difference, but as a minority leader, it's more important to understand the parliamentarian rules. As far as I can tell, they are about equal on that.

I don't care about this issue one way or the other. But I think that loyalty on a sinking ship is a good way to drown. She shouldn't automatically be tossed under the bus. But she shouldn't be beyond reach, either.

Now that's change I can believe in (0.00 / 0)
Albio Sires urges Pelosi to step aside as Dems' House leader!

my biggest issue (0.00 / 0)
My biggest issue with Pelosi is how she can energize and unify our opposition.  While Obama was definitely a target in these mid-term elections, I heard Pelosi's name used in vain just as much, if not more.

Then again, did she draw that much attention because she was a good progressive leader, which really upset our conservative opposition?

nope (0.00 / 0)
I'm convinced that the main reason the right wing troglodytes were energized is because they are as uncomfortable with having a woman in a very powerful position as they are with an African American.  The fact that she was effective only caused their heads to explode even more.

These would be the same trogs (0.00 / 0)
that form the caravan behind Sarah Palin? I think you have to look for a better reason than sexism.

I agree with Thurman (0.00 / 0)
She took heat because she is a Liberal, and proud to be a Liberal.  But at what point does being a good liberal become a problem to the point it energizes the opposition in an unexpected manner?

[ Parent ]
She did a great job as Speaker (0.00 / 0)
but its time for a change, she had her 4 years, I am sure there is someone else as talented as she is to lead the caucus.

I agree (0.00 / 0)
I am actually not a huge fan of Pelosi, but she is not the reason that the Democrats lost the House. She was able to get a lot of good legislation passed, but most, if not all of it got bottled-up or watered-down in the Senate to the point that whatever made it to Obama's desk for his signature was a complete mess and not worth the paper that it was written on.

Steny Hoyer or whatever Blue Dog takes her on is going to have a very hard time taking her down, because most of the Democrats who lost on Tuesday were conservatives. Very few liberal Democrats lost their re-election campaigns.

My hope is that a progressive like Frank Pallone or Anthony Weiner comes forward as an alternative to Pelosi who is acceptable to the conservatives Democrats as well. Pelosi is very good at working behind the scenes to get things done, but she is terrible at being the face and the voice of the House Democratic Caucus.
