Battle for Bergen

I can't say I am surprised this morning by what happened in Bergen County. The urge for voters to usher out the era of Joe Ferriero was palpable here.  Charlie Stile got it right.

This was a referendum on Joe Ferriero, the disgraced Bergen County Democratic Chairman.  His favorite candidates in previous elections and those who could be counted on to be loyal to him lost badly last night. Particularly County Executive Dennis McNerney - who I dubbed the "3 million dollar man" because that is what Ferriero's BCDO spent on him in his previous election.

Sheriff Leo Mcquire - "Mr. Personality" whose name was often thrown around as someone who would straighten us Real Bergen Dems out when we got unruly at internal BCDO elections, was also a major FOJ (friend of Joe).  He reminds me of the top cop in Boardwalk Empire who is always hanging with Nucky.  Definitely one of Joe's all time favorite candidates.

Then we go to James Carroll, a Thomas Nast caricature if ever there was one.  Larger than life with the uncanny ability to turn a flaming crimson when reformer and former Hasbrouck Heights councilwoman Carol Skiba would walk into the Freeholder meetings to collect ammunition in her fight against Pay to Play.  Carroll, a dual office holder for years with an additional gig as Mayor of Demarest, finally was convinced to ditch the Mayor position to seek re-election, also appears to have lost the Demarest Mayor seat for the BCDO just by association.

Unfairly or not, Elizabeth Calabrese was also seen as a Joe Ferriero candidate.  She also shares a last name with some of the most colorful politicians in Eastern Bergen County.  In fact, because of the way Joe Ferriero handed out cash for elections, he ALWAYS wanted something in return, which is why ANY candidate who took Joe's money for an election and stayed in his favor appeared suspect to Bergen County voters.

Kathe Donovan is an interesting figure.  She is popular with Independents and Democrats here.  Because they TRUST her.  The BCRO hates her because they feel she was too independent. If you ask me, I believe the Republican freeholder candidates were carried in on Donovan's coattails.  She always would win elections even when the BCRO couldn't get a shred of respect due to their constant Keystone Cops approach to Bergen County elections.  The BCRO was joke, which was why the reformer dems stepped up - the BCRO was ineffectual at being the opposition party to Joe Ferriero's antics.

More after the jump.

carolh :: Battle for Bergen
Donovan CARRIED the Republican Freeholders to victory on a wave of anti-pay to play fervor.  The opposite of a Tea Party candidate, Donovan is practically a Democrat in her moderateness.  She has earned the respect of voters across party lines. Donovan's election, more than any single event this year sounds like the slamming of some huge weighty door on the era of Joe Ferrieo's reign.

In my local race, the relatively popular Democratic Mayor and his team were still trounced because of BCDO, Joe Ferriero, Pay to Play associations.  Emerson - a tiny town - with less than 8,000 folks in it whose Dem Municipal County Committee Chair just so happens to be Willie Ortiz (see previous dairies about THIS guy),  hired Maser Engineering - one of the largest Pay to Play contributors who gets no-bid contracts with Bergen County.  That association - the fact that a tiny town hired a Halliburton sized engineering firm with ties to the BCDO cost a relatively popular Democrat the Mayor's seat when the Republicans hit him again and again with that one issue.

Our police Chief - Republican Saudino also was able to beat Leo McQuire.  IF you have ever seen the Emerson police station - it is actually cute.  Exactly proportionate to the town. Morale is high and the men seem happy, and there are not twenty gazillion empty police cars in the lot.  Saudino seems to run a tight little happy ship here.  I can see why his popularity is extremely high and why his attention to keeping costs low won him this seat.

The incredible amount of money spent on police in Bergen County has been a sore spot for voters for a long time. We have a Sheriff's Dept AND a County police force, who had been used in the past to Ferry Joe Ferriero to Atlantic City as well as Yankee Games.

Disgraced indicted Police Chief Ken Zisa who is still on the Elections Commission (go figure!) hasn't helped the image of anyone in blue within a 15 mile radius of Hackensack either. The thought of a fiscally conservative Police Chief Republican in charge in Hackensack is a refreshing thought to many here.

I may have had a hand in helping bring down Joe's regime, but I'm not sorry.  We need new blood, new candidates and a new way to do the people's business.  Now that some of these folks will have more time on their hands, they can reflect on why they lost the County for the Democrats.  Maybe a new BCDO will actually DO something about high property taxes instead of making them higher to feed the Pay to Play machine which, like a vampire, is always hungry and feeds on us little taxpayers until we are drained dry.

Well Said Carol, You Are !00% Correct..... (0.00 / 0)
......what's needed in Bergen County now is for the BCDO to become a vehicle for the kinds of people that Loretta Weinberg dubbed the "Real Bergen Democrats".

(I still believe that a full Real Bergen Democratic slate was the way to go  instead of accepting the compromise John Corzine offered...but that's another diary.)

Meanwhile, no doubt some of these Republicans will now be tempted to now play their own brand of machine politics.   If the new freeholders play Joe Ferriero style of pay to play politics it will be a disaster.  For the sake of the people of Bergen County, I truly hope they resist that temptation.

If the Republican Freeholders now take the side of monied interests over the best interests of the people and of the environment....they will themselves be one termers.

But simply being free of crass corruption isn't good enough.......these Republicans will have to provide decent services for ALL the people of Bergen County.....or they too can/should/will be voted out of office next time out.

Let's hear it for democracy!   :-)

Future of the BCDO (0.00 / 0)
If the loss of county control results in a loss of pay-to-play revenue, will the next couple of years provide an opportunity for progressive reformers to take control of the party?  I've always thought that as long as the money was flowing, there was really no way to dislodge the Ferriero crowd. Maybe this is the time to start identifying the next leaders of the party. If we wait until the opportunity appears, it may be too late to take advantage of it.
The last time such an opportunity presented itself was when Joe Ferriero stepped down. I was, quite frankly, shocked that his chosen successor was promptly elected with no challenge from the progressive reform bloc. Will the next opening be similarly missed?

Got Hope? (0.00 / 0)
I could be wrong but I find the "chosen successor" charge a little overblown. (is that timid enough for you:) The "chosen successor" was an early supporter of Barack Obama and ultimately one of the presidential campaigns National Finance Chairs. No need to go into Ferriero's disdain for the Obama campaign here I hope.

And the FIRST public appearance by the "chosen successor" was at the home of the aforementioned arch enemy, Bergen Grassroots. Can we call that an Olive Branch?

Obviously when the dust settles there will be change at the BCDO. We can hypothesize about a full campaign blitz to overtake the committee, something I think was tried before and failed. Or we can   prudently consider the self interests of all involved and pick our friends and our fights wisely.

Just wanted to add... (0.00 / 0)
In no way am I trying to discourage whomever can or would consider running for county committee. I've come out strongly in support of just that effort by any and all willing and capable. (the cancer at the center of our body politic is what I've called it) I'm just trying to point out that now might be the time to give credit where it is due, seek common ground where we can  and make the most of this opportunity.

John Adler... (4.00 / 1)
...was an early supporter of President Obama and it is clear that this does not necessarily mean anything in the grand scheme of things, particularly when you consider how much of a disappointment Obama himself has been as President.

Wisconsin's loss should be America's gain.  Draft Russ Feingold for President in 2012!!!

Choices were taken away (0.00 / 0)
That's how the BCDO works.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

The possible successors were arm-twisted (0.00 / 0)
so that the choice was taken away.

That is what happened when his successor was chosen.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

In that case... (0.00 / 0)
...I'll suggest that Bergen County progressive reformers need some leaders who aren't afraid of having their arms twisted.

where are the races in 2011 to watch? (0.00 / 0)
where are the bergen races in 2011 to watch?  where can progressives make a difference - who needs bucking up and who needs to be taken down?

I'll get back to you on that one.... (0.00 / 0)

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

Paul Sarlo (0.00 / 0)
If we are just talking about Bergen County, then this conversation begins and ends with Paul Sarlo.  I don't know what his district is going to look like, especially since Joe Cryan put him on the legislative redistricting commission, but as soon as his district is formed, a progressive primary election challenger must be found to take him on and take him out.

Bob Gordon, Loretta Weinberg, and their Assemblyperson running mates are as progressive as anybody in Trenton, so if there is a place in Bergen County where progressive primary election resources should be dedicated, it is in Sarlo's district and Sarlo's district only.

[ Parent ]
Sarlo has ALWAYS been a FOJ (0.00 / 0)
Sarlo is linked forever with Joe Ferriero.  He may be trying to distance himself now, but Sarlo's seat was never in danger from a Ferriero-led purge. He was sort of like the Justices who were safe from Karl Rove's list. For doing what?  Who can say?  But he was always loyal to Boss Joe.

I'd like to see someone else there....

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

One more point (0.00 / 0)
The relationship between Kathe and the BCRO is an interesting one.  They only gave her less than $40,000 to run her race - about the same that a Mayor's race costs in Tenafly.  She didn't even run her campaign from the BCRO.

She is almost a Real Bergen Republican based on the friction between Kathe and the BCRO - who should be kissing her feet right now.

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.

my first republican vote (0.00 / 0)
in over 30 years. Good riddance to McNerney. I wish Donovan had won the primary in 2006 so we could have dumped him then. In the bigger picture of Dem losses across the country, it was a bittersweet vote from me.

$50,000/yr (0.00 / 0)
I wonder if this means J. Carroll will loose his $50k position on the parole board?

THE CANDIDATES got the slate they wanted so they have NO ONE to blame but themselves.

Carol is certainly on fire! (4.00 / 2)
We miss you in Tenafly, Carol. But glad you're still telling it "like it is".  What the BCDO needs is some real introspection and willingness to acknowledge what went wrong and why! I'm afraid no one will want do that. Instead they're already trying to line up a "new" leader. We're awaiting re-districting and then legislative races (and/or primaries) which will be next on the schedule!

I miss being in your district, Senator :) (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for the kind words.  It has been hard to take a break from it all for the past year, but I always love to read your diary every week!

I am finally really getting my strength back and am feeling better.  I look forward to blogging more and getting involved in District 39.  It's too Republican here.  We need to get ME passed and I know a certain seat that needs to flip for that to happen....

One Vote.  Yours.  It really does matter.
