Christie Lacks Understanding Of State Government

by: Valerie Huttle

At a recent town hall meeting Gov. Chris Christie accused the Legislature of being on 'vacation' and not coming back to Trenton until Nov. 8, a comment that I found to be offensive and ill-informed.

When my colleagues and I are not in Trenton working to find realistic solutions to the issues facing New Jersey residents, we're in our district offices speaking with families, elderly residents and unemployed workers who are worried about their futures.

By implying that our constituent discussions amount to a vacation, rather than a critical part of the legislative process, it's clear that Gov. Christie has little understanding of state government and even less consideration for the valuable input of the voters who elect legislators to represent them.

This fall Gov. Christie traveled out of New Jersey to campaign for candidates all over the country.

Instead of going to Ohio or California, I invite Gov. Christie to come to my legislative district the next time he hits the road. I am sure that he will find that what legislators do in their districts is just as vital as the work we do in Trenton and certainly impacts the way we approach legislative matters.

Christie is an advocate (4.00 / 1)
for mis-information.  He knows the legislature is part-time (at least I think he knows).  In theory, when not in session, legislators have other careers and jobs to manage.  Instead of advocating for a full time legislature, he espouses the theory to his indolent electorate that the legislature goes on vacation when not in session.

The reality is that being a member of  the legislature really is a full time job (for most) for a part time salary.  Creating a full time legislature would reduce conflicts of interest and allow legislators to assist their constituency without trying to juggle another job.

Glad you're speaking out (4.00 / 1)
But please take on the Governor over policy issues.

Honestly... (0.00 / 0)
the governor has got you in a corner...

You guys did school funding in like 3 weeks... you guys approved 116 Corzine appointments on the last day in session last year...

"I was busy in my district." isn't going to fly with the public if there is no action soon...

The Governor (0.00 / 0)
could call them back into special session if he wanted that kind of progress. Apparently, he'd rather just run his mouth.

Who's running their mouth ... (0.00 / 0)
"could call them back into special session if he wanted that kind of progress "... refresh our memory of what happened when Christie called the Legislature back to vote on a supreme  court nominee? .....Oops you forgot already huh ?.

If a Dem Governor (0.00 / 0)
spent the campaign season running around the country building his Presidential aspirations... well, G-d only knows how you'd be going on.

As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand.

I'd say you're running your mouth (0.00 / 0)
with your brain entirely disengaged.

There was NEVER a special session called to vote on a supreme court nominee. There was a special session to deal with the property tax cap. There was a special session on the budget. But no special session, at all, about any nominee anywhere.

In accordance with the NJ Constitution, Chief Justice Rabner picked someone to temporarily fill the empty seat until everyone else involved begins to act like an adult.

Back to Valerie Huttle's Post (4.00 / 1)
Glad my Assembly colleague gave this post some visibility.  I, too, was annoyed about the Governor saying we (the legislature) were "all on vacation" while he, of course, "was working".  Well I've been working on pay-to-play new bill with Citizens Campaign, as well as updating transparency laws. Am still waiting to hear from our Governor who I thought would be interested in having some bipartisan support on these issues. I've been known to get a few "good government" issues passed every so often in my career - but I guess I'm not as tall as Cory Booker or Joe D, so a height requirement might be the barometer for a call back!
