In the Belly of the Beast

by: deciminyan

Early this morning, I learned through a friend that Governor Christie would be holding a Town Hall meeting in nearby Moorestown.  After seeing how liberal bloggers have been treated at Republican events in the last few days, I decided to go, but with some trepidation.  But Moorestonians are good and welcoming people.  So I left my Obama shirt at home and decided to venture into Christie land - the belly of the beast.

More after the fold...

deciminyan :: In the Belly of the Beast
I arrived at the Moorestown Community Center about 40 minutes prior to the scheduled start and the line outside was already long.  Jon Runyan was working the crowd and I shook his hand, even though we don't see eye-to-eye.  (I'm relatively tall, but it was still eye-to-neck).  When I got into the auditorium, most of the seats were full, the Philadelphia TV stations had their cameras set up, and luckily I found an empty seat in the fourth row, just behind a group of uniformed school girls who were taking time off from their classes to see the governor.

Listening to the pre-game comments from the faithful, I felt like I was at a rock concert, waiting for the idol to come out and enliven the audience.  And he did.  There's no question that the governor's agenda resonates with local Republicans.

The governor started out by lambasting the legislature and demonizing the teachers' union.  As popular as he is with the faithful, he's also treated as a rock star by the mainstream media, and I'm sure you've seen or read a lot about his positions and I won't repeat them here.

After his soliloquy, he spent much of the allotted time answering questions.  All but the last question were from friendly partisans - the last person gave him some pushback on the tunnel decision and the dialog was only mildly confrontational - nowhere near YouTube quality.

One pleasant surprise was his answer to a question on immigration.  He correctly pointed out that this is a federal issue, and there's nothing the state can do (are you listening, Governor Brewer?)  After he berated the President and Congress for inaction, he went on to remind the audience that "we can't demogogue this issue.  We cannot make [illegals] the object of our anger and violence."  Kudos, Mr. Governor.

So I survived my two hours in the GOP den.  I've got a long way to go to be on a par with Joey, but it's a start.

We live in a complex world and have complex problems in its governance.  But some people long for simple solutions to our issues, and Chris Christie provides them.  He even admitted, "we're from New Jersey - we don't do nuance."  So here we are with impotent leadership in our state legislature, a governor who refuses to negotiate or compromise, and a fiscal crisis that threatens the welfare of future generations of New Jerseyans.  We may be waiting for Superman - he certainly hasn't yet put Trenton on his itinerary.

I can't help but think of Giuliani's -- also a former U.S. Attorney -- answer that "illegal immigration" is not a crime and the negative reaction he got from the right-wing faithful.  Glad Christie is sounding somewhat reasonable, but it may not last long if he runs for higher office.

Yeah, it's not much fun for New Jersey to be Christie's warm-up room.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Just a great diary. Fun to read. And it comes with its own Quote of the Day (for later).

That must have been some adventure (0.00 / 0)
Like going on a tour of the Food Network.

He was all over the radio yesterday (4.00 / 2)
I was scanning my FM car radio driving home last night from Pennsylvania and he must have been on at least 6 different stations doing an interview, I think it was Eric Scott on 101.5 but briadcast on at least five other stations as well.

He was asked about his pal Mike Ritacco and his answer was right out of the scene in Casablanca where the corrupt French police captain is "shocked" to discover there is gambling going on at the same time he is pocketing his winnings.

As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand.

$1 per gallon gas tax increase? (0.00 / 0)
I'm no public finance expert, but that sounds bogus.

Would cost overruns be $5 billion?

If so, would ALL cost overruns have to be financed in one year?

Sound like more of the Big Fat Lie Machine at work.

I don't understand fiscal conservatives (0.00 / 0)
It's amazing that Christie rails about New Jersey not getting enough back from our federal taxes while he squanders over a billion dollars of federal aid over the tunnel and Race to the Top.
