But it might be interesting to discuss.  Someone at Swing State Project pointed out that it's the first time since 1998 that we don't have a Presidential or Senate campaign on the ballot -- and those campaigns all won the state. So the Congressional (and county, etc.) candidates are on their own.  Are they ready to run the GOTV operations on their own?

yeah (0.00 / 0)
When Corzine ran, I got paid canvassers at my door with sophisticated electronics. And Salem County is not exactly considered the key to the state. (Though I wasn't around for the Senate run, that was for governor.)  Big difference from the local efforts.

Corzine was not a factor until 2000 (4.00 / 1)
1998 was the year that Rush Holt defeated Mike "Twinkle Twinkle Kenneth Starr" Pappas to win his first term as a Congressman in the first of two consecutive nail-biter campaigns prior to swapping friendly constituencies with Mike Ferguson.  Maryanne Connelly continued to close the gap between herself and Bob Franks.

Bill Pascrell, Jr. and Steve Rothman both did reasonably well in their first re-election campaigns.  Frank Pallone defeated a well-funded Mike Ferguson in a tougher than expected race.  I have no doubt that Rob Andrews, Bob Menendez, and Donald Payne won re-election in landslides.  On the Republican side, I am pretty sure that Rodney Frelinghuysen, Frank LoBiondo, Marge Roukema, Jim Saxton, and Chris Smith all won their re-elections by large margins.

Coordinated statewide campaigns like the ones in 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008 provide the congressional district campaigns with resources like coordinated door hangers and other literature and pay for some coordinated manpower that the congressional campaigns usually have to hire, but by and large, they are more dependent on the congressional campaigns to do the bulk of the voter ID and GOTV work than vice versa.  The most important contribution that a contested statewide campaign makes to the downticket races is daily media coverage, a unified message, and consistently higher turnout due to increased interest in the outcome.

Obviously, higher turnout always benefits Democrats so this year was clearly going to be challenging from the start and the national mood doesn't help, but I am confident that all of the Democratic incumbents except John Adler will win re-election and Ed Potosnak has been far more competitive than anybody would have expected.

Hey thanks (4.00 / 2)
Congressman Frank Pallone, Ed Potosnak and Congressman Rush Holt for calling in - great hearing from you on the campaign trail, and nice to see how hard you're all working.

:)

... only has one guest tonight (someone named Obama).  Blue Jersey had three!  Way to go!

What a loser. One guest and he's not even a citizen. Dang.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Fun show tonight! (0.00 / 0)
Big thanks to Rush Holt, Frank Pallone and Ed Potosnak for taking a few minutes to loop Blue Jersey in to their busy countdown schedules.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.
