Gannett, PoliticsNJ.com to 13th CD race: yawn

by: thecontrarian

In the weeks preceding a relatively quiet primary election day, arguably the only Congressional race that excited anyone was the mudfest between Perth Amboy Mayor Joe Vas and West New York Assemblyman Albio Sires.

In the end, Sires thumped Vas, 3-1.  The story was big news in Hudson County, garnering the lead story in today's Jersey Journal plus some election night coverage from Vas HQ by Journal reporter Jarrett Renshaw.

How about Vas's hometown paper, the Gannett-owned Home News Tribune?  The good folks who bring us reasoned and enlightened commentary by Bob Ingle penned a generic "staff and wire report" (read: we were too cheap to send a reporter to Hudson County so we tried to do it by telephone) story that doesn't even include a comment from the local candidate.

PoliticsNJ.com once again failed to link to any of today's Jersey Journal coverage of the race (wow, there really is a paper in this state called Today's Sunbeam).

Maybe the site has an anti-Hudson bias.  Despite my constant nagging dating back a few years, PoliticsNJ.com has consistently ignored my e-mails asking when it will start linking to Al Sullivan's fantastic 'Between the Lines' political column in the Hudson Reporter weekly newspaper.  Sullivan has been covering Hudson politics since the late 1990s and has inherited the esteemed mantle as the county's best political writer since the 2003 passing of longtime Jersey Journal columnist Peter Weiss.

Pretty cool, huh?  It is really is the Garden State down here too.

Two things (0.00 / 0)
1) The Jersey Journal wasn't available online until the late morning today.  Wally does the links for PoliticsNJ much earlier than that and tends to not add new article links unless its for a breaking issue.  There were other Vas/Sires articles linked there, so I don't see this as a reason to call the site anti-Hudson.

2) The Home News Tribune sucks when it comes to political coverage.  Always has and, until we get some major, Monmouth-style corruption arrests, it probably always will.

PoliticsNJ.com's problem dates long before today (0.00 / 0)
Believe me, I'be been asking Wally Edge, et al to please run more political stories from the Jersey Journal since the web site first burst on the screen a few years ago.  And PoliticsNJ.com has long ignored the Hudson Reporter, which has done a better job covering the county than the slowly-dying Jersey Journal.

a burn on bob ingle?! (0.00 / 0)
is that you joe donnelly!?

haha leave bobby boy alone.  he may be a sleazy muckraker, but he is a muckraker nevertheless and new jersey needs that.  a little accountability never hurt anyone.

althought his crush on joe roberts is undeniable.

Bob Ingle is the laziest muckraker I've ever seen (0.00 / 0)
This guy has an office in the Statehouse press row, right?  Yet I never hear any juicy political gossip from Bob, just a rehash of what I read in the Ledger the day before, only with a smarmy, nasty bite.  He probably just surfs the Net all day for rumor and then posts in online.  Heck, if he wasn't such a GOP apologist, Bob Ingle should blog here ;-)

His writings smack of the senile old coot down the street who just dismisses every semi-intelligent discussion of politics or public policy with knee-jerk utterances like "harumph, all politicians are corrupt" and "all state workers are lazy and overpaid."

Tell me something I *don't* know, Bob.  I think I miss Jim Goodman more than I'd like to admit.

Don't know if Bob called it first... (0.00 / 0)
But his nickname of Peter 'see no evil' Harvey was pretty dead on. I can't think of one worthwhile accomplishment Peter Havey provided.

I've followed Bob for two or three years now, he does seem to be getting a little more vicious in his critisms lately.

I think I read the above incorrectly, but I wanted to be sure. You're not saying that you agree with those "senile old coot" statements that all politicians are corrupt and that all state workers are lazy and overpaid, are you?

Well, no... (0.00 / 0)
...but they just seem like overused cliches.  I expect more originality from New Jersey's Fourth Estate.
