Finally - An Adler/Runyan Debate Open to the Public

I recently lamented that the debates for NJ-3's congressional seat were in closed-to-the-public radio studios or at for-fee venues.  Well, that's no longer the case.  John Adler and Jon Runyan will be debating at the JCC in Cherry Hill on October 11 at 7:30PM, and the organizers confirmed to me today that it is open to the public.  Prior to the debate, there will be a cocktail reception with an $18 cover charge, but participation at the reception is not required to attend the debate.  It should be interesting to see how an ex-footballer who has memorized the Tea Party lines does against the Harvard-educated lawyer.

Runyan ducks, not Adler (0.00 / 0)
I think Adler's challenged Runyan but Runyan's been ducking face-to-face matchups in front of, you know [gulp], the public.

At any rate, that's going to be one interesting debate, and I hope for more.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Yesterday's non-debate (0.00 / 0)
Last night, Adler and Runyan had a "debate" sponsored by the Burlington County Chamber of Commerce.  I was not there, as I did not want to pay the $40 for admission.  Based on the reports in PolitickerNJ and the Inquirer, it sounded like a rehash of their radio debates - Runyan conflating Adler with Nancy Pelosi and Adler still trying to cement his "centrist" creds.  From what I can gather in the reports, questions were either submitted in advance or tightly controlled.

We need to bring these candidates closer to the people, and have them answer questions relevant to us and how they will represent us.  I don't care if Adler voted with Pelosi 90% of the time - I suspect most of those votes were procedural.  I don't care if Runyan will use the venerable Jim Saxton as an advisor  - I want to be convinced that Runyan is not a Tea Party acolyte as he claims.  We need to cover important issues like the ongoing oil wars, net neutrality, education, the recession, and health care.
