The Real World vs. Christie's World

by: Bill Orr

Thu Aug 19, 2010 at 09:16:15 AM EDT

For July the BLS reported, NJ unemployment was at 9.7%, a slight  increase over both last month and the same month last year, and above the national average of 9.5%. Realty Trac reported home sales in NJ declined precipitously by 55%, from 7,206 in June to 3,196 in July. This is bad news for New Jerseyans, but does Governor Christie care?

On Tuesday the governor signed into law the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority. In a press release Assembly Majority Leader Cryan said, "Quite simply, this is all about jobs for New Jerseyans." In the governor's press release the word "jobs" is not mentioned once. Instead it refers to loftier notions of "investment, continuity and economic growth." Does he care that NJ unemployment is higher than the national average?  Does he care about jobs for New Jerseyans?

In order to help people buy homes and reduce current unsold inventory, Assemblyman and Budget Committee Chair Louis Greenwald sponsored a bill to establish a New Jersey Homebuyer Tax Credit Program. Christe vetoed it saying "It would undermine our 2011 budget." Does he care that home sales fell 23% in May, 27% in June, and 55% in July? Does he care how this impacts New Jerseyans?

In the Quinnipiac poll released today Governor Christie is presented as "winning the hearts and minds of NJ voters who approve 51% - 36% of the job he is doing." Christie, however, seems remarkably detached from the lives of real people. He couches so much of what he says in terms of costs, finances and the budget, and he seldom talks about the impact of his actions on individuals. His single-minded focus on budget cutting  and reducing the size of government satisfies his limited and short-sighted approach to governing. But does it satisfy those who are un-or-underemployed, concerned they might become un-or-underemployed, unable to sell their house or unable to buy a house. How many others are worried about not receiving a rebate, increased public transportation costs, smaller class sizes, or fewer municipal services?  Do you get any sense he sympathizes with these people?  When will New Jerseyans from the "Real World" strike back at "Christie's World?"

When will Democrats in Trenton grow a backbone (4.00 / 1)
is the more pertinent question.

I'm not surprised his approval rating has increased.  Although he's dead wrong, he's shown the kind of leadership I wish Obama had shown.  He's willing to be bold, take risks, and put his opposition on the defensive.  As people face the consequences of his budget and tax policies, I think you'll see the approval rating back down.  But I'm sure if that happens, it won't be due to New Jersey Democratic officeholders.

I think you answered your own question in one sentence.

It's morning in America (4.00 / 1)
We've seen this before, it's the Reagan revolution revisited.  The right and their amazing ability to frame issues in short, catchy phrases leave the logical left eating their dust.  Millions of Joe the Plumbers believe that having millionaires pay a fair share of the cost of having a civilized nation raises their taxes, so they vote against their self-interest.  We need to pound home that Republicans want to give tax breaks to the Wall Street bankers that stole our money to give themselves bonuses.

Why shouldn't I love this guy (0.00 / 0)
my 2011 property taxes were held to 3 % increase ,the lowest in over 25 years ...it's not great but a start ..as for rebates Corzine took mine away !As for sales tax Corzine raised mine as well !

Tax breaks (0.00 / 0)
I wish I had waited to buy my house.  I didn't get a tax break, put 20% down and made sure I could afford the payments to pay off the mortgage before committing to any other wants.
Now, as a senior, I only have to figure out how to pay my property taxes since Christie lied by removing and delaying the rebates enabling me to stay in my NJ home.
Grumpy old man

there's very few things (0.00 / 0)
left in the political realm of ideas for creating jobs that haven't been tried already, or argued to a stalemate.  If we could somehow use our influence in a nontraditional way to bully the Mexican gov't into going after petty corruption, the consequences would be fantastic for us and Mexico on so many levels- including job creation in both countries (New Jersey is part of North America)- that it's  tragic nobody listens to me.  To the people on this site concerned that I'll be wasting valuable time this Sept by going into Mexico by car, when I should be home campaigning hard against my opponent, Congressman for Life, Frank LoBiondo, I say, it's my long shot scheme and it might work..
Illegals, amnesty and the pressure they could bring to bear on that rotten gov't in Mexico is the key.  It's a one time opportunity while they wait, and wait, and wait for the amnesty that might never come.  I'd be happy to discuss, I know I'm leaving you puzzling, who's he, and what's he talking about?  If one cable outlet, one major newspaper wrote about my trip into no-mans land to visit my friend who'll meat me at the border, the problems I have getting name recognition now, would be yesterdays worry.
