Screw you, Rep. Garrett

by: Adam L

Fri Jul 30, 2010 at 11:05:53 PM EDT

Of all of the scummy things that Rep. Garrett has voted against (cuz he doesn't actually vote FOR anything), this is one of the worst:
A bill that would have provided up to $7.4 billion in aid to people sickened by World Trade Center dust fell short in the House on Thursday, raising the possibility that the bulk of compensation for the ill will come from a legal settlement hammered out in the federal courts.

The bill would have provided free health care and compensation payments to 9/11 rescue and recovery workers who fell ill after working in the trade center ruins.

So those who were brave enough and put their time, lives and health on the line to help those in the days and weeks after 9/11 have to fight in court to have the diseases and illnesses they got from serving this country after the 9/11 attacks.  This vote actually had a huge majority - it got support from 255 Reps and voted against by 159 - far more than 50% support.  But it failed to get a 2/3 majority and lost by around 20 votes.

Now, only 12 Republicans in the entire House voted for this, and 4 of them were from New Jersey.  You know, the state that had the 2nd most victims on 9/11.  And guess who was the one Representative that couldn't even stomach helping his own fellow New Jerseyans pay for the health problems that arose from them stepping up for their country in its' darkest day?

There is no excuse.  Nothing can be more indicative of what Garrett's priorities are, and who his is as a person to his core.  There is a quote I saw recently that goes something like this:

Don't tell me what you believe. Tell me what you do and I'll tell you what you believe.

How true it is, Rep. Garrett.  How true it is.

and don't forget (4.00 / 3)
workers and residents of southern Manhattan were LIED to by EPA Administrator Christie Whitman who said the air was safe to breath.

A federal judge said that Whitman's actions "shocked the conscience".

The government's lies greatly increase the responsibility to compensate those mad sick.

This is What a Real Democrat Looks and Sounds Like (4.00 / 3)
I pray that the New Jersey Democrats take a lesson from Anthony Weiner.

Weiner was intense and passionate, but his arguments here are SUBSTANTIAL and intellectually sound as well as morally compelling.

The Republican party of 2010 has been taken over by bullies and bigots.   Their agenda is servile to big business interests that rape and pillage the lives of the deluded working class and elderly that make up the ground troops of the tea party movement.

If John Corzine had been about to muster half of the heated visible and vocal passion and  the cold ineluctable hard LOGIC of Weiner's blessed outburst in this video....Jon Corzine would have kicked Christie's ass all over the state.

People voted for Chritie because he SOUNDS like he gives a shit about them.  Christie is a con man.    Christie, like Bernie Madoff is great at playing into people's selfishness and greed and making them feel like he's got a great "deal" for them.

As my friend, Adam correctly notes.....the same is true of Scott Garrett.   Scott Garrett is actually far more dangerous than Christie.   Christie is a con man.....but Garrett is a "Christian" fundamentalist fanatic who actually believes what he says.

Garrett needs to be politically taken apart by a hot and smart opponent who isn't afraid to manifest in the way Weiner does in this video.

Garrett's rationales for his votes are mostly ideological bullshit delivered in a quasi plausible manner......but when scrutinized come across as appeals to greed, selfishness, bigotry and fear.   The opposite of real Christianity in my humble opinion.

Surely there must be some ONE person in the 5th district who is willing and able to politically beat the bullshit out of Scott Garrett?

this guy (0.00 / 0)
We can't seem to get rid of this guy. He keeps winning and has a lot of people behind him. Where is the charismatic Dem that can take this guy down? For that matter, where is the moderate Republican that will primary him?  Nick, I agree, Corzine's biggest problem was that he looked like he didn't give a shit. He should have fought for something. I think if he fought for gay marriage, he would have won. Even if people disagreed with him, they would have respected his conviction. I heard people who voted for Bush the second time say that they couldn't stand Bush but gave him credit for having guts (or at least appeared to be decisive), in contrast to Kerry.

Shake every friggin' hand in the district (4.00 / 1)
Defeating Scott Garrett is not going to be a matter of putting up a web site, getting on Facebook, or doing street theatre in front of Garrett's office.  There are three things that MUST be done, some of which WE can do without even having to put out effort for a particular candidate:

1)  Write letters to our newspapers.  Scott Garrett spends OUR money sending out what are essentially campaign flyers FROM HIS CONGRESISONAL OFFICE.  Each one of these needs to be pointed out and debunked.

2)  Get the word out to our neighbors about what he is.

3)  The candidate that is successful will somehow devote enough time to a campaign to go door-to-door in areas where independent voters predominate.  Bergen County, at least, tends to be a "party line" district, becuase of the way our voting machines are.  They aren't voting for Garrett because they know anything about him, they vote for him because they always vote Republican and he is on the Republican line.  (This is also how my town ended up with the same corrupt hacks and cronies who have been running it for 30 years in our first contested election in all that time last year.)

The 5th may be a Republican district, but it's not a bats**t crazy wingnut district.  Garrett MUST be exposed.

The candidate who will be successful against him will get OUT THERE and go door-to-door and shake every hand in the district and tell people what he stands for -- and what the implications are of what Garrett stands for.

It's not going to be easy to beat this stealth lunatic.  But I think the right candidate can do it.  The problem is that we have never had a candidate with the energy or the guts or the time or the sheer ruthlessness to do it.
