Tom Moran Explains Why It's Time for Ernie to Go!

(Bump - promoted by jmelli)

Personally, I think Tom Moran misses the point more than he hits it, but in his column today, he clearly explains why it's time for the voters of the 5th District to give old Ernie the heave-ho:

Garrett is a born-again Christian who wants public schools to teach intelligent design as an alternative to evolution, and to set aside time for prayer each day.

He believes you have the right to keep an assault weapons in your closet, and says he may back legislation to let you to carry a concealed handgun as well.

He wants to open the Alaskan wilderness to oil drilling, and has voiced no objection to drilling off the Jersey Shore.

Last year, he was one of 11 to vote against providing relief for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

PocketAces :: Tom Moran Explains Why It's Time for Ernie to Go!
I bet there are some Southern Republicans who say to themselves, "The Superfund sites have made that man whacko."

Continuing on, Moran explains:

Garrett is far more conservative than his five Republicans colleagues in the state's congressional delegation, parting company with them on the environment, on guns, on religion and on votes like Katrina relief.

He says disgraced Texas Rep. Tom DeLay is a good man who is a victim of political persecution. And his answer to poverty is to provide more tax cuts skewed to the rich, in hopes of stimulating job growth. Enough said.

But while he may be out of step in New Jersey, he is in better sync with Republicans in Washington.

When you're to the right of Chris Smith, I think it's time to start reconsidering your positions.

But the best line of all in the piece is this:

He is soft-spoken and polite, but unlike most politicians, he doesn't seem to enjoy discussing his views. During an interview in his Newton office, he furrowed his brow at almost every question, as if he were tired of having to explain himself.

Well, Ernie, it's going to be a tiring campaign for you, because you're finally going to have to explain your views to the voters of the 5th District.  You can't skate your way to victory this time, hiding out on your farm in the hills.  It's time to drag you out into the light.

Yeah, that's all well and good, but... (0.00 / 0)
Out here in Warren County, the paper of record is The Easton Express-Times. For most of the county, that's where we get our news.

Frankly, it sucks.

When we had Kate Blok out here, Kate really tried to cover things of a political nature and inform the citizenry. Sad to say, Kate has moved onto other things in her life, as one can expect from a very intelligent woman. We are no longer so well informed.

It is rare to non-existant for E-T to report on Ernie Da' Wrench in any substantive way. Oh sure, you see something reported when he makes one of his rare, and usually stealth, appearences in the county, about once or twice a year. But generally, E-T reports republican, editorializes republican and skews republican.

Bluntly, people out here just don't know Ernie Da' Wrench.

I am sure he likes that turn of events just fine.

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.

You've Just Made a Good Case For... (0.00 / 0)
...Why whomever wins tomorrows Primary should spend a LOT of time campaigning in Garrett's back yard!!!

Sunlight is a pretty good disinfectant.

But what will he do (0.00 / 0)
if his gay lover starts posting the compromising pictures on the Internet. Rummy, The Dummy, and Dick, oh my!!

Restore democracy and the Constitution for which it stands.

What It Will Take to Defeat Scott Garrett (0.00 / 0)
Garrett needs to be attacked ruthlessly and relentlessly.

The best way to politically eviscerate Scott Garrett and to take the 5th in a landslide is to TELL THE TRUTH about Garrett!!!

Of course Garrett will cry out like the proverbial stuck pig.  From HIS perspetive telling the unvarnished truth will be perceived, and spun, as "negative" campaigning.

Regardless of who wins the Primary in the 5th in order to win in the General Election...

It will take a candidate not afraid to speak in public at length over and over again. A candidate HAPPILY able to speak competently without a script and who will be able to answer queastions as they arise from anyone.  A standard twenty minut stump speech filled with platitudes won't do it.

It will take a candidate who will take the fight to Garrett in his own neighborhood.  A conventional race along the lines of the past, can only result in the same outcome.

For a bit of info about the threat to our nations future presented by extreme right wing radicalism masquerading as "Christianity" give a listen to interview you'll reach at the following link.

Fresh Air from WHYY, May 11, 2006 ·  Journalist Michelle Goldberg, a senior writer for the online magazine Salon, and covers the Christian Right. In her new book, Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism, she writes that Christian nationalists believe the Bible is literally true -- and they want to see the nation governed by that truth..

These misguided folks no more represent Cristianity than the Taliban represent Islam.

I don't believe that most voters in the 5th would subcribe to the kind of "Christian Nationalism" that is the supportive core of Garretts candidacy.

Unfortunately... (0.00 / 0)
...I think what it will take to defeat Garrett is a candidate with an [R] after his or her name.  Unless there's some kind of cataclysmic political shift underway, I just don't see district 5 going blue anytime soon.  Now I kind of wish Ann Sumers hadn't switched parties, so she could "primary" Garrett every time he runs.  Considering how he got into office, he should never face an uncontested primary.

Cataclysmic Events (0.00 / 0)
We're in a war.  A war which the President and his people, essentially, LIED us into...or they were so incredibly incompetent as to make the Keystone Cops look like the Olympic Gold Medal synchronized swim team in comparison.

Scott Garrett supports this lying/incompetent President. Even many Republicans are becoming sick and tired of Bush's lies and incompetence.

That fact ALONE should be cataclysmic enough. But there's much more.  Garrett is a dangerous extremist who only holds office because he has successfully employed the kinds of stealth techniques at which the radical "Christian" have become expert.  If you follow the link in my last post here and listen to the interview; you'll hear just how dangerous and, essentially, undemocratic these dangerous fanatics are.

I saw the Gore movie, "An Inconvenient Truth" the day it came out.  Climate Change/Global Warming; THAT'S another cataclysmic event that is ongoing and will, if unchecked, become the greatest threat to human existence in history.

The kinds of tectonic shifts you speak of can only come from below; from the grassroots.  Only a candidate capable of cultivating a grassroots following and getting tens of thousands of new voters registered can beat Garrett...and beat him bad.  It wouldn't even be close.

Unfortunately, it seems that REAL grassroots politics is anathema to the entrenched establishment of our Party.

don't forget the helicopter fly over of north Jersey flooding (0.00 / 0)
Are there any pictures of Garrett's helicopter fly over of the north Jersey flooding last year with FEMA?  That would go nicely on a flyer with a reminder of his vote against Katrina aid.

I haven't found Ferguson to be particularly eager to explain his views either.

To the right of Chris Smith? (4.00 / 1)
Hey PocketAces!

Keep avoiding the point that Smith is moderate on many issues like housing, vets benefits, housing, programs for seniors, and Dems will never beat him. The Times of Trenton finally gave up on going after him solely on the pro-life issued and recognized his other accomplishments and endorsed him.  A Dem challenger would be wise to start a campaign by saying something like, "I respect Chris Smith as I person of principle..." and then go after the national GOP on domestic and foreign policy issues.  Interestingly, Smith's camp calls DeLay immoral, unethical and more..remember how Smith a committee chairmanship because of he wanted more money for veterans' programs?  Bet a lot of 4th district voters do.

Well Said (0.00 / 0)
Smith is vulnerable in just the way you say.  He really can't get out of being an accomplice to the de facto (if not de jure) crimes of George Bush.  Now, if Smith starts condeming his President as a total corrupt incompetent...that's another story.

It would take an opponent who was extremely personable, charismatic, articulate, and brilliant....now if we could just get Bill Clinton to move into that district.  ;-)

Seriously, I'm sure there are probably hundreds of Democratic Progressive men and women who fit that bill throughout our State...the problem is that they don't want to get involved in the muck of politics.

We need to clean up the muck!
