The Governor Did Invite Us......

by: Senator Loretta Weinberg

Wed Jul 14, 2010 at 11:55:44 PM EDT

.....to talk about Family Planning Centers, their funding and women's access to health care.  Assemblywoman Linda Stender and I met with Governor Christie and Lt Governor Guadagno for an hour this afternoon. It was a seemingly amiable and respectful exchange. Mr. Christie was interested in the statistics we gave him outlining the number and kinds of services provided at these centers. He did say that the Treasurer questioned the funding source we have in the bill, so we supplied him with the OLS analysis which confirmed our figures.  No promises were made, but he did say we would have an answer sooner, rather than later.  Both Assemblywoman Stender and I assured him that we would prefer taking this issue off his plate while giving back to uninsured women this important access for themselves and their families.  However, though we thanked him for his courtesy during the meeting, we also made it clear that this is not an issue which can be easily dismissed. Women's access to health care is a priority and will continue to be!  This funding must be restored.

This is really rewarding news.

Thank you for going back, and back, and back again. Thanks to the women legislators who went with you and spoke up. And thanks to the men who stood with you. And shout out to Jay Lassiter, who captured some of this direct, polite-but-firm assertiveness on camera.

I'm curious what funding sources he was doubting ...?

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

Ah, and now I'm reading the details.... (0.00 / 0)
It sounds like the governor isn't quite accepting yet the information OLS is providing. I'm really interested to see how this plays out. It sounds like the whole thing may hinge on that question.

What's really behind this? (0.00 / 0)
We're still willing to give the Governor the "benefit of the doubt", but make no mistake, we are confident with OLS' opinion on the funding mechanism. In fact we are now extending an invite to the Treasurer to hear his input on the funding during our Health Committee meeting on Monday at 1 p.m. Stay tuned. All of us involved with this fight, hope that Governor Christie really understands the importance of access to health care particularly for uninsured women in our State. We showed him that in the words of the FQHCs themselves, they will not be able to absorb a new large patient influx. Let's hope he signs it soon, and we can all stop talking about THIS subject.

I want car ... (1.00 / 1)
but if I don't have the money for one it won't happen ....just like this bill ,and besides if CC ever signs this he would lose a big part of his voter base

Christie's Voter Base is Anti-Women? (0.00 / 0)

I have no idea if Christie's Voter Base is anti-women, but you seem to know that that's the case.  If that's true, we might as well have a public discussion about why CC won't sign the bill because he is anti-women.

This may be.... (0.00 / 0)
one of the stupidest comments I have ever read on this blog in the 4 years I've been reading.  Wait, it is the stupidest comment I've ever read in 4 years of reading Blue Jersey.

Congratulations.

besides being anti-woman it's anti-fetus (0.00 / 0)
a fetuses well being depends on the health status of the mother. many of the risk factors for poor intrauterine environments are modifiable if health conditions are addressed before pregnancy occurs. Prenatal care is not an adequate substitute and has not decreased the rates of preterm birth, low birth weight, or closed the gaps in racial outcome disparities.

Furthermore the burgeoning field of epigenetics is identifying the effects of the prenatal environment on the risks of childhood obesity, diabetes, and possibly autism.

Well woman exams are essential to families in identifying health conditions which affect a woman so she can have the best prenatal environment possible.

Since about 50% of pregnancies are mistimed or unplanned, keeping women healthy whether or not they are planning on conceiving should be in the interest of those who profess to care so much children.

Steve Lonegan will flip his wig (4.00 / 2)
It will be quite a show from the TNut fringe and unreconstructed Loneganistas.  Mike Doperty and the gruesome twosome (Carroll/McHose) will have a fit.

Jay Webber will really be caught between an extremely rightwing rock and a rightwing hard place.  It will be entertaining to see how he gets around it.

Paul Mulshine and the rest of the uberrightwing bloggers will have another excuse to remind their audience why the better candidate (in their estimation) lost last year's GOP primary.
