Do New Jerseyans realize what is going on?

When then-Governor Elect Chris Christie started talking about the increases in "fees" and cuts in services, property tax rebates and earned income credits for the lower and middle income families, while calling for tax cuts for the super rich and corporations, we here called it "class warfare" - and some in the corporate media even followed along.

When his budget plans were released; still without any tax increase for the super rich but more cuts to services and tax, oops, "fee" increases to everyone else - it was obvious that Christie is looking to recreate the failed supply side/"trickle down" economic theories that failed so many working middle and lower income families when it was implemented under Reagan.

But in addition to trying to recreate the supply side disaster in NJ, Christie is going one further - by taking the failed policies of his mentors George W. Bush, Donald Rumsfeld and Dick Cheney by privatizing NJ services:

New Jersey would close its centralized car inspection lanes and motorists would pay for their own emissions tests under a sweeping set of recommendations set to be released by the Christie administration today.

State parks, psychiatric hospitals and even Turnpike toll booths could also be run by private operators, according to the 57-page report on privatization obtained by The Star-Ledger. Preschool classrooms would no longer be built at public expense, state employees would pay for parking and private vendors would dish out food, deliver health care and run education programs behind prison walls.

Of course, there are a number of issues here - for starters, when Christie first put the panel together, it was chaired by Washington lobbyist and former Rep. Dick Zimmer, and did not include any representatives from public employee unions.  In fact, we don't have to look far into the past to remember how much of a disaster it was when then-Governor Whitman tried privatizing auto inspections.

But it goes further than that.

This is the model of Government that Cheney and Rumsfeld implemented during their reign of terror over the past decade.  Politically connected cronies would get no bid contracts (which we all know that Christie was fond of as well).  Under this model, there was rampant waste and fraud - look at the billions that went missing in Iraq, the "privatized" military problems with Blackwater, the scads of billions that went to Halliburton and KBR for substandard service.  Look at "No Crony Left Behind", which pumped tens of millions of dollars into George W. Bush's brother for his "educational program" that was sold in Florida (by edict of Bush's other brother, Jeb) and in Texas.

Privatization doesn't lead to lower costs.  It may lead to less government employees, but it leads to waste, fraud and substandard services - all while pumping the same or more money to friends and cronies.

This is what Chris Christie is trying to ram down NJ's throat - failed supply side economic theories and failed waste and fraud filled privatization and corporatization of essential services.

Know your facts ..... (0.00 / 0)
Christie has not cut or increased the taxes on any class ...the rates are exactly where they have been  when he took office .Do you dispute that fact ?

He must pay taxes owed to Trenton (3.00 / 1)
We just had a 22% increase in real estate taxes in Trenton, what do you think will happen when he withholds 38 million of in-lieu of tax payments to Trenton. The people here are poor and can not afford that type of increase.

ad valorem tax ..... (0.00 / 0)
is not based on how much you can afford to pay but how much is your property worth  ...this issue has been festering for 30 years ,has never been addressed ,and it still is not being addressed .When people start to really lose their homes or just walk away from their homes because of this confiscorty tax perhaps Trenton will wake up ,But I doubt it

So why did he veto the millionaires tax? (0.00 / 0)
certainly millionaires can afford to pay!

bullshit (4.00 / 1)
you're talking to a state tax expert, so don't try the kabuki crap on me.

Eliminating property tax rebates is an increase.  Reducing the earned income credit is a tax increase.

Calling it a "fee" on the use of services is no different from the use tax that is already there.

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

Bingo (3.00 / 1)
Christie is a total loser.  I can't believe that the Dems caved in to this bully.  They should have forced him to shut the government down.  But no, they went along for the ride.  So now, the bully is back for round two.  Be prepared for this clown to come after everything we value in this state.  I wonder when will the Dems start fighting back?

[ Parent ]
Rates are the same but no rebate (3.00 / 1)
I call that a tax increase.

[ Parent ]
Psychiatric Hospitals Maybe (3.00 / 1)
Only because the state has taken a position to hospitalize as few patients as possible, making the TPH and Greystone model a thing of the past... unless you consolidate down to one hospital.

As for DMV Services, state parks, etc... a big old "NO!" The history with the DMV should have been enough to not have even brought that one up. And mentioning the turnpike and privatization? Where have these advisors been over the last 2 decades that they are so out of touch with NJ voters, R's and D's alike? We don't want / need privatization, we just want government run better.

I can't wait to read the report. Sounds like a doozy.

we want govt smaller (0.00 / 0)
the only way to cut taxes ....

"We" (4.00 / 1)
What do you mean "we"?  The less than 50% who voted for Christie?

[ Parent ]
"we" (4.00 / 2)
speak for yourself.  I want government smarter, not smaller.

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

[ Parent ]
Who is this we? (0.00 / 0)
Speak for yourself.

[ Parent ]
smaller Governor? Oh yeah! (3.50 / 2)
In fact, I voted for a much slimmer one myself.

LOL (0.00 / 0)
If ever cuts were needed ...

you know the rest.

[ Parent ]
So who will run state inspections? (3.00 / 1)
What a hoot! (4.00 / 1)
NJ finally got inspections working well.  Along comes his supreme majesty Christie and he wants to screw it all up again.  Just perfect!  Hey, this may be exactly what is needed to wake up the people who thought they were getting something good with Christie.  I am sure they will love paying admittance fees to their parks as well.

This is what happens when you cave in to a bully (4.00 / 1)
Didn't the Democratic Party learn anything from the Bush era?  Everytime the Democartic Party caved in, Bush came back for more.  Until he was so emboldened that he thought he could privatize social security.  The same phenomena is happening with Christie.  The more we cave in, the more he will go after.  NJ residents should realize by now that Christie is a dedicated right wing idealogue.

So NJ residents were ticked at Corzine for suggesting that we privatize the roads.  Surprise, surprise - here comes Christie witha plan to privatize the roads and the parks and the hospitals, pre-school, etc...

NJ residents got what they voted for.  Congrats!
