Quote of the Day: A vote for this budget is a vote for massive tax increases

by: Jason Springer

Tue Jun 22, 2010 at 12:00:14 PM EDT

It seems like conservatives have been the most critical of this budget from the Governor. While Democrats have focused on specific programs they wanted to save, the right side of the aisle has slammed the budget as a whole. Here's the latest from Steve Longan:
Americans for Prosperity will be ramping up its effort to fight this bad budget. This budget needs to be defeated and those lawmakers who vote for it need to be held to account. A vote for this budget is a vote for massive tax increases. This is not the kind of change the governor or the Republicans in the legislature promised. Now they need to hear from their constituents
I can't believe I'm giving Steve Lonegan quote of the day again, but someone needs to point out all the harm that will be done by this shift of the burden to those who can least afford it. He reminded us the other day that New Jersey taxpayers are facing a massive $2.56B tax hike if the budget is passed. If conservative Republicans in the Legislature join Lonegan in opposition, that would mean more Democrats need to support for passage and that could make things interesting.

Americans for Prosperity Slams Governor Christie Budget "Compromise"

New Jersey Taxpayers Lose Again While Trenton's Welfare State Grows Unabated

BOGOTA, NJ - Americans for Prosperity is blasting Governor Christie for caving to pressure from Democrat lawmakers and restoring millions in funding for welfare programs.

According to NewJerseyNewsroom.com the compromise reached with Trenton Democrats restores approximately $75 million in funds for "adult medical day care, home-care services...NJ STARS scholarships, the NJ After 3 childcare program," among other Democrat pet programs.

"For all the praise this Governor has received as a conservative tax cutter and spending cutter, at the end of the day we are left with a budget worse than Jon Corzine's," said Americans for Prosperity State Director and former Bogota mayor Steve Lonegan.

"This is simply a fiscally irresponsible budget. It's bad enough New Jersey taxpayers are facing a massive $2.56B tax increase but now we see that even more money is being diverted to Trenton's central planners to sustain the state's bloated bureaucracies and never-ending welfare state," added Lonegan.

"This Governor was elected on the promise of reining in Trenton and providing tax relief to the most over-taxed state in the nation. Instead, Governor Christie's budget is more of the same. It's a real blow to the taxpayers of New Jersey and the consequences to our state's finances and the economy will be severe."

Lonegan pledged to fight the budget until it passed.

"Americans for Prosperity will be ramping up its effort to fight this bad budget. This budget needs to be defeated and those lawmakers who vote for it need to be held to account. A vote for this budget is a vote for massive tax increases. This is not the kind of change the governor or the Republicans in the legislature promised. Now they need to hear from their constituents," concluded Lonegan.

I have noticed elsewhere that Christie is taking heat from TNuts like Lonegan and Paul Mulshine for actually increasing the percentage of state aid to Abbott districts from 54% under Corzine to 60%.

Alison McHose is proposing an amendment to the budget that would strip $600 million for pre-schools and use that money to restore money for schools in suburban and rural (ie. GOP) districts.
