Quote of the Day: "New Jersey taxpayers are facing a massive $2.56B tax hike"

by: Jason Springer

Fri Jun 18, 2010 at 06:52:24 PM EDT

The Governor and members of the GOP keep saying, and the mainstream media keeps repeating that Chris Christie won't sign a budget that raises taxes. But even Steve Lonegan knows that's a bunch of nonsense. Check out this quote about what Governor Christie is really doing:
"The idea that this Governor is cutting taxes and spending is a complete myth. New Jersey taxpayers are facing a massive $2.56B tax hike which is a direct result of this Governor's reckless cuts to state aid. Homeowners across the state are about to get slammed with one of the biggest property tax increases in state history. This Governor's budget is going to do untold damage to New Jersey's already fragile economy. People are going to be hurt."
Ut oh... Steve Lonegan said what Republicans, the press and even some Democrats aren't willing to say: "the emperor has no clothes." Christie can try to talk tough all he wants about campaign pledges and even use his shrill statements to veto taxes on his millionaire friends, but make no mistake - Governor Chris Christie is raising taxes.

Timing is Everything (0.00 / 0)
Notice that Lonegan made his statement late on a Friday -- the time that politicians know will get the least news coverage.

Lonegan (0.00 / 0)
is not a particularly brilliant politician.

perhaps not (4.00 / 1)
But he seems to be much more intellectually honest than Christie! Lonegan made no bones about his neo-conservative reactionary agenda!

Christie is old school politics, punishing enemies, buying off frenemies, combined with a reactionary ideology that will destroy the middle class.

He's much more dangerous.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

"Reckless cuts"? (0.00 / 0)
Steve Lonegan complaining about "reckless cuts to state aid" is like the Pope complaining there are too many Catholics.

Never thought I would agree with Lonegan (0.00 / 0)
but yes, taxpayers are facing a massive tax hike and the "Governor's budget is going to do untold damage to New Jersey's already fragile economy. People are going to be hurt."
Where we differ is that the tax hike should be aimed at those who can most easily afford it - millionaires.  And our fragile economy calls for selective stimulus not the inflicting of pain on those more vulnerable.

Abominable miscreants (0.00 / 0)
My favorite quote of the day comes from Mr. Svanberg, BP's Chairman. When announcing that CEO Tony Hayward would no longer be in charge of the company's response to the spill, Svanberg said he has decided to get more personally involved in the oil giant's handling of the crisis. "This has now turned into a reputational matter, a financial squeeze for BP and a political matter, and that is why you will now see more of me." Remarkably missing from his reasons are any compassion or concern for the human and ecological catastrophe wreaked by BP. Oh ,yes, this is the same man who a day before expressed concern for the "small people."

These BP leaders are incredible and would almost be comical if it were not for the fact they are abominable miscreants.
