QoTD: Unitary Executive Edition

by: Rosi Efthim

In its reporting of yesterday's whiplash veto of a Democratic package of bills including the millionaires' tax and a restoration of senior benefits, politickernj picked up a killer quote. First the windup:

Someone in the press corps asked Christie about a quote from earlier yesterday, attributed to Majority Leader Joe Cryan, who suggested headlines should read: Christie to seniors: Drop Dead. Now, the pitch. Christie's response is the Quote of the Day:

I long ago stopped caring about what Joe Cryan said about anything.

Yeah, or almost anybody else besides the yuk-yucking yes-men (and women) who bind around him and think his every moment is brilliant. As Adam pointed out, Christie is The Unitary Executive, his way pointed by George Bush, schooled in the art by Karl Rove. And like Bush, Christie not only doesn't care what the other Party thinks, or reporters think, but he doesn't give two figs for you either.

As I said the day he was elected: (0.00 / 0)
NJ is the only state to elect George Bush to a third term.

As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand.

Christie (0.00 / 0)
is taking the arrogant fuck approach to governing.

In all honesty, he is blowing a big chance to do some good things.

Scott Garrett - on the wrong side of, well, everything.

Republicans (3.00 / 1)
aren't about doing some good things. That may be the reason.

As scarce as truth is, the supply has always been in excess of the demand.

Christie is also following Tim Pawlenty's Minnesota Path (0.00 / 0)
For 8 years TPaw has refused to compromise or negotiate with the democratic controlled state legislature and has gotten away with it.

Almost every MN quality of life indicator has deteriorated while he was in office.

And Minnesotans take "the good life" seriously.  Without great schools and universities, arts, music, theater, parks, state forests, fishing, boating, and sports Minnesota is simply a cold Omaha as the old wisdom goes.

But Pawlenty has been able to govern according to Rovian ideology and to do serious damage both to government and the state's creative class infrastructure.  And he was able to co-opt the democratic Speaker of the House (who's running for Governor this year) into agreeing to his unconstitutional budget unallotment --- the removal of approved and allocated budget dollars from specific programs.

The MN supreme court ruled unallotment unconstitutional, but in order to avoid an extended legislative session, a special session called during campaign season or a state shutdown, Minnesota's Speaker of the House caved on certain unallotment items in final negotiations.

This is what we're looking at if can't force Chris Christie into compromise.  Our only chance may be winning veto proof majorities next year.

The Irony (4.00 / 1)
of republican's government is "too big" mantra is that it is them who caused the increase in government.  Think about it  --  everytime republicans leave office, they leave behind scorched earth which requires agencies and laws to ensure that the greed that benefited a few and screws the most (and leaves government holding the bag) never happens again.
Big boy wants to roll it back a few decades so the scorched earth policies that hurt society in the past can begin anew and make those few who surround him rich and the religous and the racist think they actually accomplished something.
