Deep Thought

Even if every senator still running manages to get re-elected, and polls say that is unlikely, Senator Lautenberg will be more senior than half the Senate next January. That's only with credit for taking office in 2003.

a caveat (0.00 / 0)
Lautenberg lost nearly all of his seniority during his hiatus.  When he returned to the Senate in 2003 as a freshman, his prior service gave him more tenure than everyone else in the class of 2003.  he was the "Dean of the Freshman class of '03" So to speak....  fortunately for NJ that gave him a half-step edge on the other handful of senators who began their service the same term Lautenberg went back.

That puts him ahead of the other five sworn in on the same date --- though he had been in the House all those years instead of the Senate though he'd still win the "tie breakers" and he'd outrank one (Arkansas) Senator regardless.
