Why I am challenging John Adler in the June 8th Democratic Primary

by: Barry Bendar

Thu May 13, 2010 at 10:09:59 PM EDT

Interesting that the primary challenger here is a person who did everything he could to get the incumbent, John Adler, elected, and is now so disappointed that he can't sit by and let Adler go unchallenged. Adler should pay attention to this, the number of people his choices have alienated. - - promoted by Rosi Efthim

Greetings!

My name is Barry Bendar and I am running for Congress in New Jersey's 3rd District.

Like many of you, I'm an ordinary working class American. I'm married with two great children. I work as a database administrator during the day while I spend my evenings and weekends volunteering for good government. I became involved in politics 8 years ago at the municipal level. I jumped in feet first and became the Lacey Township Democratic Municipal Chairman while at the same time helping to raise money for and participating in campaigns for our local, county and state Democratic candidates.

Barry Bendar :: Why I am challenging John Adler in the June 8th Democratic Primary
I've always hung onto a lifelong belief -- those that we trust with our vote should have our best interest at heart. Well, I'm dismayed to say that this belief was destroyed. Our current Congressman, John Adler is to blame for that. Two years ago I supported the Democratic Congressional Candidate in his quest to become the first Democrat elected in my Congressional district since 1882. As municipal chairman, I helped organize an aggressive local campaign. That November, our hard work was rewarded, and we elected our Democrat.

Well, as the months went by, there was a change in our Congressman.  In Town Hall meetings he appeared to be catering to the right...

...Then came the vote on Healthcare Reform. Here was a man who during his entire 2008 campaign, stressed that his success could be credited to support he received from the federal government while he was growing up. Now his tune was that it cost too much to make sure every American gets the proper healthcare, so that they too can have the same opportunity to grow up and be successful the way he did. There wasn't enough being done to control healthcare costs, he complained.

Well, if American Citizens are dying because they have no healthcare coverage, what good is it for them to stall healthcare reform because these changes don't do enough to control healthcare costs? I know we can do better.

When are we going to have elected officials who do the right thing even if it costs them their elected office? To those patriots who voted for the Clinton budget which led to our booming economy in the 90's and to those patriots who voted for healthcare reform, some of whom may lose their elected offices but will be proven right in history, I say "Thank you." I'm tired of those who vote based on political calculations and pander to different audiences. You either stand for something or you stand for nothing.

My Congressman was now merely pandering to the far right fringe in the deluded idea that these people would support him in his re-election bid.  Why couldn't he believe that the people who got him elected in 2008 could do the same in 2010?

I still believe to this day that a person's vote is a sacred gift.  That person is voting for you because they believe in the same things that you do.  Their ethics match yours.  For an elected official to change those beliefs and ethics for the sake of re-election is a complete betrayal of that sacred gift that was bestowed upon them. It's time to teach our Congressman what being a Democrat is all about. Because of his 180 degree turnaround, 3rd district Democrats have lost their voice in Congress. It's time to regain it by voting for me, Barry Bendar.  I am proud to be a Democrat, and will never hide my affiliation.

I also liked the Blue Jersey Radio interview.

I do notice you don't have very long to get your message out. I'm sure there are many who are looking for an alternative, but do you think they will get a chance to hear what you have to say?

thank you for your comment Hopeful (4.00 / 1)
we are going to run an aggressive campaign on a small but specific budget and we hope to reach every registered Democrat in the district. Please spread the word! We need your help also!!

Mr. Bednar,

Thank you for picking up the gauntlet and giving the voters of the third district a real choice.  Even if you are not victorious, it is important that we support you and send an unambiguous message to Mr. Adler that he has greatly disappointed the very people who helped him get elected in the first place.  Best of luck, and let us know how we can help.

Thanks for running! (0.00 / 0)
I personally hate uncontested primaries.  Often the people often have no choice as many districts are gerrymandered to be "safe" for any given party.

Good luck!

This WAS a safe Republican district! (0.00 / 0)
Until John Adler broke the 100plus year Republican stranglehold on it!

To be accurate, Adler broke that stranglehold with the gift of a lifetime, the power struggle between Ocean County GOP chair George Gilmore and Burlington County GOP chair Bill Layton that resulted in disarray and chaos for the Republicans. No such thing this time around. It's harder work.

It's not a particularly snappy signature, but here's what I think we need in the next NJ Democratic State Chair.

It was an open seat and an opportunity (0.00 / 0)
that was seized!

Yes, it may be harder work, so do we make it harder on ourselves?

My concern is ceding the seat back ... and going backwards with a Republican, and worse, one more conservative than Saxton.

OK, now the die is cast and will play out.
