Award-Nominated Support Books for Gay Teens "Inappropriate"

by: Jason Springer

Thu May 06, 2010 at 03:45:00 PM EDT

I wonder how many books are in the Rancocas Valley library?  A former councilwoman and group of a few others have decided that three of them are offensive and must be removed from the library. And the school board actually went along with them on one:
The book, "Revolutionary Voices: A Multicultural Queer Youth Anthology" was removed under pressure from a group who felt its content was inappropriate. The book, edited by Amy Sonnie, includes a series of poetry, prose and personal accounts by gay, lesbian, and transgender youth.

At its Tuesday night meeting, the board decided not to remove two other books that the group also thought were inappropriate for young readers - "The Full Spectrum: A New Generation of Writing About Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning and Other Identities" and "Love and Sex: Ten Stories of Truth."

Why can't they just accept the idea that gay people could actually love each other and be intimate too? For all the talk of getting government out of people's lives, they are very eager to limit what can be said and done when it deals with the bedroom. It's not like this action is a common occurence in the district and the board didn't bother to explain, giving no reason for its action according to the Superintendent:
"I've been here six years and this is the first one," Moskalski said of the book's removal. "It doesn't happen very often."

Moskalski said an advisory committee of 10 people, including a parent, a clergy member, the school librarian and the school board's curriculum committee reviewed the books. The curriculum committee then made a recommendation to the entire school board.

What was a member of the clergy doing on a review committee for a public high school? I have to be honest, I haven't read any of the books. And none of them are required reading by the school, so the students won't have to read them either if they don't want to. They just happen to be in the library and aren't even being read that much, having been checked out a grand total of 19 times since 2001 for all three books. That's less than one time per year for each book.

What is the school board doing going along with this? How is it that of all the books in the library, these three, checked out 19 times in the last 9 years total are a problem?  I also love how at the end of the Courier Post article they make like it should be ok because the districts have Gay/Straight Alliances. Way to carry the water. The group says they're coming my way too because next they want to come and ban these books from the school district where I attended.

Even dumber... (0.00 / 0)
Is ignoring the fact that these teens can more or less find what they want on internet or other sources and there is relatively little they can do about it.

Pretty much the only point accomplished here was that the school board stood up and announced they are bigots.

Practically, removing the book from the library really accomplishes nothing. The interested teen will find that content through other means.

It was one thing to ban anything about sex twenty or thirty years ago, but the internet has made it an absurd gesture.

One banning leads to another (0.00 / 0)

Right wing conservatives strike again in their efforts to ban books that might just provide help, comfort, and context for youth. According to Wikipedia,  Revolutionary Voices: A Multicultural Queer Youth Anthology, edited by Amy Sonnie  is an anthology created by and for radical queer youth, committed specifically to youth of color, young women, transgender and bisexual youth, (dis)abled youth, and poor/working class youth. It was published in 2000 and was a finalist in two categories for a Lamda Literary Award.

A committee decided the book was inappropriate for a high school library although it was edited specifically for that age level. The committee in effect is discriminating against people based on age, color, race, sex, disability, and affectional or sexual orientation. I hope students and parents at Rancocas Valley High School will protest this book banning. One successful banning empowers bigots to continue their efforts.

Pastors (0.00 / 0)
are often asked to be on all sorts of advisory panels. For better or worse. I don't have a problem with them serving, as long as it is made clear they are serving as a member of the community and not to be the community's pastor.

As far as the banning goes...I think they just ensured a few more sales for the author. On the other hand - if you ban a book no one reads; then what have you actually accomplished?

Stupid people doing stupid things.

Serves Mount Holly and the surrounding towns, a moderate to liberal area with a significant POC presence

I guess some people felt intimidated by some teabags, and those who have common sense need to stop cowering over their gestapo tactics.

Not that we should be banning these books from conservative school districts either.

who's okay with book banning? (0.00 / 0)
Why in the world would Steve Goldstein give his okay to a book banning that could be beneficial for gay youth to have access to?

Steven Goldstein, chairman of the gay rights group Garden State Equality, says he doesn't have a problem with removing a book over graphic content.

It's unfortunate that GSE doesn't see this type of censorship as worthy of their time.

I wish someone would focus on Glenn Beck's local 9/12 group and their role in this situation and others for that matter.  The Board was given documents by this group containing excerpts of the books, a blog post from the Gateway Pundit, Jim Hoft, and other items condemning Kevin Jennings, a homosexual & gay right's activist, in Obama's administration.  Jennings created GLSEN when he was in college & this organization recommended the 3 books in the challenge as well as others deemed appropriate for young people.  Please have a voice concerning this matter...
