NJ Correspondents Club Annual Show

by: Juan Melli

Wed May 17, 2006 at 11:41:09 PM EDT

Tonight was the NJ Legislative Correspondents Club Annual Show - where the NJ media gets to roast New Jersey's politicians. My table was a pretty interesting bunch - Newark mayor-elect Cory Booker, CWA President Carla Katz and Assemblyman Bill Baroni, among others - all of whom were easy targets and took the roasting in stride.

One of my favorite skits was a song sung by reporter Robert Schwaneberg of the Star Ledger. The song, titled "In the Book," is his take on what we can expect to find in former Governor Jim McGreevey's new book. If you're subscribed to our podcast, it should download automatically for you. If not, you can use the player below to listen (it may take a little while to load before it plays). My best attempt at transcribing the lyrics is below the fold.

Juan Melli :: NJ Correspondents Club Annual Show
In the Book by Robert Schwaneberg

Jewish boys just seem to find out early
How to open doors with a huge smile
The former governor, he won't have to worry
He'll bounce job to job and go in style

Late at night when Drumthwaket got lonely
Troopers all sent home so they can't spy
They stay up late and play a game for hours
Roll the dice to see who plays the guy

You won't find that in the book
Don't bother buyin
Aint worth a look
You want details? You'll be mistook
There ain't no way he'll write that in the book

Party bosses helped with all those voters
Gave him what he needed - those county lines
But they wanted jobs and those state contracts
The farms, the grants and all those billboard signs

Jim he knows where lots of bones are buried
He doesn't need them now their pay don't play
Think he'll name some names and tell some stories
He wasn't born again, just said he's gay

He won't write that in the book
Don't bother buyin
Aint worth a look
You want the lowdown? You'll be mistook.
There ain't no way he'll write that in the book.

So he met a man, found a new life partner
A wall street type who's a perfect 10
But we don't know more - he's hiding all the details
Book's title won't be "All the Governor's men"

So he heads back all the steamy gossip
If you want that sort of thing go buy GQ
He won't talk about the leg he broke in Cape May
Won't say who was there or Golan would sue

He won't write that in the book
Don't bother buyin
Aint worth a look
You want the truth? You'll be mistook
There ain't no way he'll write that in the book

Buddy you won't find that in the book.

I am, that is. Whaddyagotta have a blog or something to rate an invitation? And nice placement, too.

We fancy blogger types get all sorts of perks. Priority seating at fancy dinners, unlimited rides on Newark's expansive subway system and four free beach tags each summer.

No - actually, I got no invitation, my ticket cost money and the placement was totally random - almost as far away from the stage as possible.

Who won tonight's award for "Best Drunken Lurch from Table to Table"? ;-)

The nom de plume has a long and distinguished history.
