So, What Municipalities Would You Consolidate?

by: IndependentNJ

After reading this Star Ledger article:

I want to ask, what municipalities would YOU consolidate.

Me, I would have all donut-hole municipalities absorb the surrounding townships, with the result being a municipality named after the donut-hole, if at all possible.

For example:

Flemington Borough + Raritan Township = Flemington Township
Princeton Borough + Princeton Township = Princeton City
Burlington City + Burlington Township = Burlington City
Bordentown Township + Bordentown City = Bordentown Town

And in Camden County, I'd resurrect the old Union Township, merge Pennsauken with Merchantville, make all the areas between Union Township, Cherry Hill, Pennsauken, and Camden as Audubon City, merge Berlin Borough with Berlin Township to become Berlin City, merge Voorhees Township with Gibbsboro to become Gibbsboro Town, merge Chesilhurst with Winslow, and the areas surrounded by Gloucester Township, Union Township Voorhees Township, and Winslow Township should become Clementon Township.

And how about merging the Wildwoods and the Amboys.

What about your ideas???

Berlin (0.00 / 0)
If East Berlin and West Berlin can overcome all that copious geopolitical melodrama to merge into plain ol' Berlin, it seems reasonable to think Berlin Borough and Berlin Township could become Berlin City.  It's not like half the town would need new passports and a different currency or anything....

There would be some chaos at first, but within months, we'd see the benefits. There's gonna be a lot of who gets what, who's cut, etc. but six months after, it will work seemlessly.

And what about this... (0.00 / 0)
...I'm also thinking of creating a merged Hudson County-Jersey City government, but the problem, understandably, could be that there are four majority Hispanic municipalities that may be upset by Hispanic issues being ignored by the merged government.

How to maintain your identity while being consolidated (0.00 / 0)
look no further than Ocean Grove.  It's a part of Neptune Township but most visitors do not realize it.  It's a part of the township with a very unique and separate identity.

another alternative to consolidation (0.00 / 0)
is sharing services.  Look at some of the services towns offer and see if they can be shared with neighboring towns.

To trim my own town's budget, I would look at garbage pickup first.   Currently in the one square mile town, trash is picked up twice a week on varying days depending on the street.  My "trash district" is 3 blocks or about 1/3 of the town.  With a town so small there's no reason that the trash collection company could not pick up the whole town in one day.  There are several towns nearby of a similar size that could do something similar and share the cost of trash pickup with my town (recycling is picked up on a once a week basis).

The DPW, Police, and Public Schools could be done on the county level, this way, it allows for resources to be allocated where they are needed most.

And yes, your town could DEFINITELY be done in one day
